Cheesy as hell but I always buy whatever torps I want, stop and load those (pass time), recheck... if nothing else I'll buy food next, load... recheck. Then anything else, etc.
Sometimes I'll buy torps one at a time just to get new inventory after every load. It's so cheesy but hey it's how the game is designed currently.
P1 are steam torpedoes
P2 are 1st gen electrics
P3 are 2nd gen electrics
P5 are acoustic homing
The pistols (detonators) are just upgraded versions, introduced to correct faults (deep running, faulty impact or magnetic pistol, etc) or for other reasons (ease of manufacture, cost, improved design, etc). The later or higher the number, the more reliable it should be.
The left (T) code is the type, the right is the pistol. Above list is for left.
Again, just look at the tooltip at the bottom.
