What is the wire going down the barrel of the 88 for?
Just a totally unimportant nerdy question, in case anyone knows.

I think OP's talking about the wire or rope winding along the actual barrel of the gun.
I could only imagine it's tied to the closure thingy that's not modeled

I know what you mean but it seems to be difficult to find information on that one. Interestingly I have seen several historical fotos of deck guns without that wire/cable thing around the barrel. It reminds me of what you can see on the periscope as well. If I should find some reliable info on that I will post it here.

On the Gun, its for the plug that keeps the water out of the barrel, so it wont rust.
Here you can see the plug and the rope.

When the gun was ready to fire, the plug should be attached to the foot of the gun mounting (the circle thing on the front of the mounting), but often they let it just hang down on the rope, if they dont forget to remove the plug befor fire the gun.

The ropes on the periscope:

they were for reducing the wake

That plug is called a tampion. There was at least one case of a U-Boat suffering casualties when they surfaced for a gun action and failed to remove the tampion before firing the weapon which exploded.

Thanks for the right term "plug"! Actually didn't know what it's called in english... ;b

Thanks, makes sense. So to be totally accurate the rope on the gun should actually hold the plug and not just "be there" so to speak, at least when not using the gun.
As for the periscope one, is there actual evidence that it did indeed reduce the wake?
