1. dieselman with 2 sailors
2. speed 1/5 in most cases
3. navigator with 2 sailor
4. dive schedule (2 hour on surface + 2 hour submerged)
never returned to refuel, but the remaining fuel on each mission was less than 10% (once with 4%)
I have no idea how you have 0 problems with fuel on the type II, I just now loaded a save where I started off the campaign and the closest assignment was 326 KM away, ok, so I put 2 sailors on diesal, 1 on navigator and full speed ahead, reached the assignment (which was right off the coast of netherlands) with 68% fuel, started patrolling (going up and down right on the edge of the assignment) and I reach about 75% of the patrolling needed before I run out of fuel completely
This is without constantly switching between electric and diesal to recharge, but the current missions are clearly not designed for this submarine imo if you're meant to do that
With this type, you need to catch the fish that swims into the net itself, and not chase after it. Well, get the IID type as quickly as possible; things with fuel are much better with it. This means that take the first tasks only for tonnage, without being distracted by minelaying or anything else, in order to get the first blueprint.
If you hover over your fuel gauge on the UI, you can read your current range on current engine speed.
Jonas, your mistake is going FULL SPEED AHEAD. Do you drive a car? If so, you must know that heavy use of the accelerator chews up petrol. A UBoat is the same. Use the lowest forward speed, with two extra engine room men, and you will be fine.
