Type II Uboat fuel
How do you honestly use this submarine without constantly switching between electric/diesal every minute? Every patrol destination uses up 50% of your fuel just to get there, and then you need to patrol and reach your port back? I would have expected much shorter patrols or something that makes using this submarine bearable, but unless Im missing something, how do you start off using this submarine without going back to port 4-5 times every assigenment?

1. dieselman with 2 sailors
2. speed 1/5 in most cases
3. navigator with 2 sailor
4. dive schedule (2 hour on surface + 2 hour submerged)

never returned to refuel, but the remaining fuel on each mission was less than 10% (once with 4%)

Had 0 problems with fuel, even on the type IIA. Keep to Willhelmshaven, pick the closest missions. And do like Alex say. And I never had to switch between electric and diesel. Does that even help? In SH3 you use a lot of diesel to charge the batteries. And even if I do belive it did not work like that before in Uboat, I think i read in a patchnote for the beta, that it now cost fuel to recharge batteries.

Didn't realise going slow would consume less fuel, maybe ill try that out, still seems like you can't do any side objectives or go after any convoy that isn't immediately on your path, my last patrol told me to go to a port to spy after finishing a patrol... when I already had less than 20% fuel beside the coast of Britain

I have no idea how you have 0 problems with fuel on the type II, I just now loaded a save where I started off the campaign and the closest assignment was 326 KM away, ok, so I put 2 sailors on diesal, 1 on navigator and full speed ahead, reached the assignment (which was right off the coast of netherlands) with 68% fuel, started patrolling (going up and down right on the edge of the assignment) and I reach about 75% of the patrolling needed before I run out of fuel completely
This is without constantly switching between electric and diesal to recharge, but the current missions are clearly not designed for this submarine imo if you're meant to do that

So far it definitely works, I checked. The savings are noticeable.

With this type, you need to catch the fish that swims into the net itself, and not chase after it. Well, get the IID type as quickly as possible; things with fuel are much better with it. This means that take the first tasks only for tonnage, without being distracted by minelaying or anything else, in order to get the first blueprint.

If you hover over your fuel gauge on the UI, you can read your current range on current engine speed.

Full speed ahead on this type can only be used in the most special cases. if you need to catch up with someone 10-20 km or something like that.

Yeah I just tried out going slow as possible (forward 1) and it made an enormous difference, I think ill just stick with the other uboats tho, taking 12 days just to finish the starting assignment is not for me, thanks Alex

I haven't tried Type II's yet, would someone mind sharing what the projected range is at a slow cruising speed?
I actually like this sub and I hope that due to its smaller size it (should) be less visible to sonars. But it is not yet as developed as 7. On waves, 7 behaves more like a ship, and I did not see roll in type 2.

I use the second gear in transit, once I reach my patrol zone, I amble around at the slowest speed setting. You have to judge how far a target is if you want to speed up to intercept. Helgoland can make a useful stopping point to refuel.

I have a little mod for that i can upload it on workshop might help. look for shorter patroles.
Double up on navigation, double up on diesel engines and run ahead standard unless you're chasing things down... Notch 2, I think it is. More than enough to patrol the North Sea.

The type IIa has a range of over 10,000km if you use slow speed and keep engines and navigation fully staffed.

Jonas, your mistake is going FULL SPEED AHEAD. Do you drive a car? If so, you must know that heavy use of the accelerator chews up petrol. A UBoat is the same. Use the lowest forward speed, with two extra engine room men, and you will be fine.
