Why do you think that wouldnt be realistic? Every tank could be flooded and blown indivualy.
Also surfaceing with the stern first isnt realistic, unless there is lots of water in the bow.
Surfaceing level/bow first is the normal way
Getting holes shot into the fuel tanks or welds on the fuel saddles broken by depth charges would be devastating. And the leaking fuel would make it much harder to evade enemy escorts. Not to mention the fuel loss if you manage it...
Not really, the boat would lose some fuel, thats all. The remaining fuel could be pumped in one of the other tanks. Depending on the damage it could even keept dry on the surface by redirecting the diesel exhaust into this tank and when diving the tank would be full anyway, so holes in it wouldnt matter.
the current state of ballast control is just atrocious...
The fuel tank alone would work as a ballast tank of his own so if you just blow out the front tank all the weight of the fuel would displace too
