Updated troubleshooting guide
Spent over an hour with a new user on the Uboat Discord server trying to help them figure out why their game was crashing whenever they tried to continue their save or even start a new game.

They performed all the necessary steps. Deleted temp files, validated game files, no mods, updated their OS and drivers but still crashing.

So what was the issue?
it was discovered that the user didn't have enough free space on their drive💽
So Uboat was trying to write to a cache and failing because there was no more space left on the drive to make a cache, thus causing the game to crash.

It's something I never would have thought of without Link's help and now we have one more item to add to our toolbox and I'm updating the troubleshooting guide as a result🔧

Hopefully this information will help someone else out in the future.

Deleting temporary files
Delete the Cache, Datasheets and Temp folders located here
C:\Users\Your Name\AppData\LocalLow\Deep Water Studio\UBOAT

"I can't find the AppData folder???"
It's there. You just need to enable "Show hidden files and folders" in Windows.

Validating your game files
It's absolutely unnecessary to reinstall the entire game. Validating your game files through Steam is faster and does the same thing. It will examine each of your game files to see if any are corrupt or missing and re-download only the files that it needs.

  1. Go to your Steam library
  2. Right-click UBOAT and select Properties
  3. Find the Local Files tab and click "Verify integrity of game files"

Disable your mods
It's always a good idea to disable your mods (if you're running any) to see if the issue is caused by a mod you're using or if it's being caused by the game itself. You don't have to unsubscribe, just disable them in your Uboat Launcher.

Is your PC up to date?
Check Windows Updates to make sure you have the latest updates installed, including optional updates as these might contain important files to running Uboat.

Also make sure to update your graphics drivers. AMD users check your Radeon app, Nvidia users check GeForce Experience.

Start a new game
There's a chance your save file might be corrupted. It's wise to always start a new game after a new patch or when disabling mods as some mods will permanently embed themselves inside your save file.

Do you have enough free space on your drive?
If you have less than 6 GB of free space on your hard drive or SSD then Uboat may crash when trying to load a save file or start a new game. Try freeing up some space so your Uboat has enough room to write a cache.

Post the contents of your output log
If none of the above basic remedies solved your issue, please upload the contents of your output log for further review. You can find it here:
C:\Users\Your_Name\AppData\LocalLow\Deep Water Studio\UBOAT\output_log.txt

Use https://pastebin.com to generate a link to prevent this discussion thread from becoming a massive mess, also there's a character limit when making comments in Steam.

Please do not post the contents of your output log directly into chat, thank you

Have you tried enabling a frame limit? There's a setting for a frame limit in the game's graphic settings. It may solve your issue.

ok thanks illl try and just some added info in my out put log i get this line over and over again

System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object
at UBOAT.Game.Scene.Entities.Engines.Awake () [0x00033] in <1bbbdc8b35564336a3fb9372418aee75>:0

have no idea if this is a normal thing or not, but its significant to me at least in that I have pages of it in the out put log.. anyways thanks McDoogie you are a superstar and if you were a woman I would ask you to marry me

I resemble that remark.. And deserved all of it.
lol.. im freakin out man.. well with great sadness i report that the last attempt to fix my game has failed. The bulkhead has been lost . It was a true honor serving under you McDoogie.
Never change, you complete me.

Also, just to add a little more info, so I go from 120 Frames per second in dock, to 2, thats right, not 2 and a zero, but "2" Frames per second as soon as i go to the main map mode when im travelling to a campaign...And again, my rig is approaching its 5 year re-rigging update, but its still no slouch and should be able to handle this its hibernation mode.

how do i submit my output log to this here safespace, Captain?

Per the last step in the guide, you can find it here:
C:\Users\Your_Name\AppData\LocalLow\Deep Water Studio\UBOAT\output_log.txt

Open the output log in notepad, copy the entire contents of that file and paste them into the text box over at https://pastebin.com

Click the "generate link" button and then paste that link here in this thread or in the other thread.

another thing i noticed, when i went to "verify the files" it says this game was updated yesterday, which is I think not a coincidence, as ive been having great performance without any issues whatsoever prior to yesterday, when seemingly, out of nowhere, an enemy saboteur, struck viciously from within, and has in effect, crippled all Uboat operations in my world. in my humblest opinion, Captain.

You are loading a save that is corrupted, did you remove any mods after starting?

Can you start new games?

Are you using mods?
