I got my first Mission in early May, and that would still be enough time to complete it, given that the Escort mission just takes 5-6 days total.
The problems I see right now are:
1) The Escort mission is not made for the Class II boat. The convoy starts ahead of you and drives 11 knots, your boat can only drive 12 knots with full ahead, so you have to catch up first and then keep going full speed. I wasn't able to catch up with the convoy before the first enemy destroyer attacked. It was luckily fought off, but still.
2) You do not get your first mission on April 9th, the historical start of Unternehmen Weserübung.
3) You do not get new Norway Campaign missions reliably. This might explain why it shows up so late for many players. I did some manual reloading on April 10th (this resets the missions given to you) but no luck. Then got my first mission somewhere in early May after returning to port from a free roam without a mission.
The only reason I was able to complete the Norway Campaign was by reloading in port again and again until I got another Norway Campaign mission.
In my opinion, as long as Unternehmen Weserübung is running, you should ALWAYS get a Norway Campaign mission when talking to the commander.
I am however very grateful for the Patrol missions in the Norway Campaign, as I hate Escort missions in literally every video game and UBOAT is no exception. So thanks for that at least.
It was quite easy since the escort missions can be completed in just a few days.
The most difficult part is, indeed, just trying to keep pace with the troopships.
Overall, I found it one of the easier campaigns to complete. However, you probably shouldn't be able to complete it by just doing a bunch of escort missions in a row, as that makes it a bit too easy.
You can try leading them away by letting yourself get detected and then running in the opposite direction of your landing boats.
Alternatively just take the L and try again and hope you get luckier next time.
This doesn't work. The moment they break off chasing you they auto beeline to the convoy again. Doing a play of this mission at the moment and even at night, in a thunderstorm the attackers automatically can find and intercept the convoy. I like you thought i could lead them away and let them amuse themselves depth charging me but, that doesn't work.
On this run had 3 single attackers, 1 pair and 1 3 ship element so that's 8 attackers for a sub with 5 torpedoes and a 20mm. The defending DDs are useless and are barely able to win a 2v1 let alone a situation where they are out numbered.
In a VII you could do this by engaging the corvettes at least with the deck gun maybe but, in the IIA/IID you cant do that and you dont have enough torpedos.
I also let the attackers attack the convoy once just to see what the defending destroyers would do and a single Black Swan was able to sink the entire convoy (all freighters and all destroyers) while taking effectively no damage in return.
This set of missions needs like some of the other campaign missions some retuning for Type IIA/D or more escorts for the troop ships to help out.
The Escorts for the troopships have up and disappeared and cannot fight anything off and are always situated behind the convoy anyhow for some reason. This is the most pain staking mission ever, but to top it off... I'm halfway there and it's the 6th of April.
(Little edit, but it's insane how fast the destroyers can fire their main cannons, quite literally 4 rounds every 5 seconds.)
Don't sail your Type II submerged. I never do unless I spot ships, and if night and no warships not even then since merchant sailors have really bad awareness. On the surface it goes 18 km/h on half speed (still faster than the convoy). On full speed it goes 23km/h and on flank it goes 27 km/h. So, surface and go flank speed until you passed it, then set half speed ahead, and then every 1-2 hours press the routine check "dive" button (blue button with headphones). That makes the uboat dive and stop all engines and listen to hydrophones for 5 minutes which will pick up any contacts in 110 km radius, then surface and start the compressor and accelerate up to whatever speed you had before the dive. Repeat until you find the aproaching british warships, speed out and intercept them, torpedo them, then go back to infront of the convoy and repeat until mission is completed outside Norway's coast.
I always get a message during my attack of the approaching british warships that the convoy is under attack. Don't know if it's a bug or the german destroyers kill another invisible group before I get back.
