Why choose crappy sub at start?
Can some1 tell me why I should start the game with crappy sub as Type IIA or Type IIB
when I can start with Type VIIB at same time period and same port (U-4 vs U48)

I like the idea to rank up as captain and get a new sub as promotion, but this way I dont see the point. And for 2000 I can switch sub ingame at port so its no big deal,

Mostly for role playing reasons. 1939 there were more type II in service and only few commanders started war commanding type VII already. The majority switched to type VII later.

Also type II is not crappy. It has its advantages. Smaller hence harder to be detected visually on surface and with asdic when submerged. Can sneak up much closer surfaced and is less detactable by asdic. 1939 It was still quite modern in comparison with other nations sub fleets, nothing to be sniffing at.

This. If you want more out of the game than just driving a boat around, if you want to give your alter ego a career from humble beginnings to beoming a feared ace, then the Type II is a pretty good starting point. It also comes with some unique challenges for the player to deal with. Fewer crew, fewer torpedos, no big deck gun, it all makes for a richer experience, imho.

I see it as more of a challenge. And it's interesting to be able to change it up a bit after years of the venerable Type VIIC.

Yes but why giving type VIIB to player right away, give it to the player after sertain time or after promotion, thats what progresson means, actually earning something, whats the point of RP'ng progresson in your head, thats game-desighner's work to make progression system

There is currently no Type IIB in the game. Available is Type IIA and Type IID. I will start off a career with the Type IIA becaue i want to see progression and have the feeling of "upgrading". So then i can upgrade to a IID and the higher boats and appreciate their advantages much better.

honestly i find at night i can get FRIGHTNIGLY close before they ever spot me, especially at night in a storm they basically have to be on top of me

Because it's tied to the starting date and the developers were so nice to allow us to start at different dates. Don't tell me you expected that you have to driive around in your small type II in 1944

At the start of the war, the Germans had the Type IA, Type IIA, Type IIB, Type VIIA, Type VIIB, and the Type IXA available for service. I am all for giving the player the ability to choose his own adventure within the bounds of historical reality.

Very weird post. If you don't want to start in the type 2 sub then um, don't?

Noone is forcing you mate.

You choose the type 2 so that later when you get into a type 7 and then (in future DLC) a glorious type 9, you really appreciate it.

So the answer is 1) realism and 2) the satisfaction of progression

In the early war, this was common enough. The Allies didn't have yet a solid ASW defence plan, and for a while they were mystified as to how ships in the middle of a convoy were sinking. Through wargames, they realized that the U-Boats were simply steaming into the formation at night from the rear. Most ship captains didn't even bother posting stern sentries to face the rear of the convoy as the ships had already been there and so there would be nothing to see.
