Once they detect you, they are like ticks, there is no way they will leave you alone!!
If it's just one destroyer after you, the advantage is yours. You can turn sharper than he can and there's no way he can sneak up on you. Now if you've got two or three after you... then good luck.
Of course the best way to escape destroyers is to not be detected at all. Early in the war the majority of U-boat attacks were done at night on the surface since the boats were almost impossible to see and ASDIC was useless on the surface. Usually the only sign of an enemy U-boat escorts would get is when one of the ships in the convoy lights up.
Hopefully the devs plan to model it, but if the remaining freighters go too far away, the escorts will break off their pursuit so as not to leave the cargo ships unscreened. Since their job is to protect supplies going to England, they'll settle for merely driving you off. Until hunter-killer groups became a thing.
If you’re in deep waters, you kinda screwed yourself if you get spotted, even with silent running. But in some parts of the deep ocean, you can go under the shadow zone which makes enemy hearing less effective, but you risk getting imploded by water pressure
It’s still possible to evade an escort without going to the shadow zone, but you’re gonna need to do a lot of maneuvering
A UBoat’s greatest asset is its stealth. Lose that stealth, you’re in big trouble. There’s a reason why the kreigsmarine had the highest casualty rate
Use the time of the decoy to move out of where you were and go silent...
1) Get the decoy update ASAP. Take care your engine room guy has them on him, because the launcher is in the engine room. When you think danger looms (ig after launching torps) dive as deep as you dare (maybe to where the yellow and red meet), engine slowish. when they ping you, plopp one of the decoys out, change direction, so that the decoy is between you and the enemy and floor it! Flank speed, full steam ahead, what ever. They should DC the decoy and the explosions should hide you.
2) If you crippled a ship you can hide under it, they can't hit you and will give up eventually.
3) Engines off, dive to the bottom, shut up and pray^^
Edit: Obviously, the bottom thing only applies in shallow waters ;) And check the tool tips for all the things that make noise. But as far as I understand the update will change how silent running works, so I don't know how important this is. But stuff like thy gyro compass, pump, the lighting, the radio, etc all have influence on your noise emissions. Also keep an eye on morale, when they have low morale, they break and bang against pipes and stuff... so take good care of them
(When morale is low I usually try to give them one big scare, so that they can get the hidden skill thing, but generally I try to keep four different foods stocked, play the radio when possible, go on vacations often, etc)
The deeper you go the harder you are to hit since the explosives though in the ater have to travel further and longer to reach you, so it give you more time to navigate and turn ect.
Also when there is an explotion then use that to your advantage since the enemy cannot hear anything for a while.. And then sneak snow away in some direction if you can and maybe even consider to turn off the engine and just be quiet and wait.
So after you fire your torpedos then dive fast and sail in another direction and go deep and change direction now and then.
It can be a good thing to sail away from the convoy direction of travel but it is not a big deal if you dont, they will speed up and the destroyers will come to you.
Or Under Over -250m
Or Use decoy and speed 1. if DD is hooked and drops depth charge, use speed 4 during 1min and stop
It can 1940
