Torpedo Speed

I have been using type 1 torpedos exclusively for the first 6 months of the war.

I have had great luck running them at the top speed. Giving targets less time to evade seems valuable.

Is there a downside to this? I’ve not noticed any ill effects.

The only downside to using max. speed is that the torpedo has less range.

30 knots - 12km range
40 knots - 7500m
44 knots - 5000m

While true, you seldom want to be firing at a range of over 1000m anyway. Only other downside is that being steam torpedoes, they leave a visible wake.

In theory but not in the game. At least not visible to the AI.

Only to range, it only matters when your torpedo misses and LUT/FAT activates.

As others have mentioned there really isn't much in the way of downside given the ranges you'll be engaging at. If I let the AI work out the targeting I've made hits out at roughly 2500m, still WELL within range for the fastest speeds.

If I target myself I rarely fire beyond 800-1000m, I think the longest was 1500m.

In practice the 44-knot speed was pretty much never used because the torpedo's engine tended to fail.

Early in the war it was a setting only for torpedo boats, they had G7a with reinforced engines and u-boats werent allowed to use that setting, later they build only the G7a with reinforced engines
