30 knots - 12km range
40 knots - 7500m
44 knots - 5000m
While true, you seldom want to be firing at a range of over 1000m anyway. Only other downside is that being steam torpedoes, they leave a visible wake.
If I target myself I rarely fire beyond 800-1000m, I think the longest was 1500m.
Early in the war it was a setting only for torpedo boats, they had G7a with reinforced engines and u-boats werent allowed to use that setting, later they build only the G7a with reinforced engines
