No new orders after dropping spy off

For the umpteenth time I have successfully dropped the spy off near Portsmouth but this time, I don't receive any new orders. I sailed all the way back to port and docked but nothing happened. Is this a bug?

There is a bug that when you have done a spy mission in save, following spy missions will break, you won't get orders. Yes, it's known. All you can do is go to home port and take a different mission.

Oh. OK. I have done it many times and this is the first time it has happened. If I take a different mission, will it work if it comes up again?

No, it's broken for the entire save game. Done once in a run, it remains broken. If you start a new run, you can do it once, all follow ups will break.
