Yes it has more range and a higher torpedo loadout than the VIIC but it also takes longer to submerge and is slower once under.
It plays a bit different. And was a welcome change in SHIII. I preferred to start with a II move to a VIIB. Grab a IX shortly before Dec 41 and switch back to the VIIC in late 42 mid 43.
That campaign provided alot of slightly different experiences.
Bigger and more range, though personally im more excited about the type xxi dlc and seeing what i can do with that earlier in the war
neutral buoyancy tanks dont exist, u-boats have negative buoyancy tanks but they have nothing to do with preflooding, they are always flooded on the surface and get blown out as soon as the u-boat is below the surface.
To dive faster, u-boats did open the vents on the bow ballast tank on alarm, befor the u-boat was ready to dive
However the type 7 is the better boat assuming you’re fighting in the Atlantic because extra torps don’t count for much if you’ve been exploded. And a bigger boat is a disadvantage in terms of stealth / survivability.
Type 7 can get under in 25 seconds
Type 9 can get under in 40 seconds
That’s a vast difference and easily the difference between life or death.
I get it; it would be fun hunting in easier waters like America in 42 or Africa where there are less escorts and therefore your chances of success and survival are dramatically increased, but in the Atlantic the type 7 was king. Donitz himself knew this and said so.
I get the enjoyment of “progression” from one boat to another because variety is nice.
Very excited for the new boats!
on the other hand, if its down to seconds... you messed up in a few previous steps XD.
muh big boat + all the experimental tech and more interesting surface guns.
stuff like actual radar dishes, not just recievers. double 37mm's etc.
