See the question and basis of this post at the veeeeery bottom of my post.
The top was purely my hopes, I want to see what other people are hoping for too.
Cheers
The developer has expressed a desire to add more variants to the game but it all depends on what the publisher, PlayWay decides.
I'm hoping they bring out some subs that have 6 torpedo tubs at the front and 2 torpedo tubs at the back. also hoping that the put more storage for more torpedos.
Nah, gotta go with the Type II, three tubes in the front, none in the rear, and only carriers 5 torpedoes total.
Type II and Type IX C/D would make the most sense.
Or why not try the Japanese subs? That would actually be bonkers, there is no sim, except a lackluster mod, that features japanese wwII subs as the main playable vehicles. Even Italian would be allright. And that's just for the axis. How awesome woul be to have the french Surcouf, a warship/submarine hybrid?
But no, we get some new simulators every once in a blue moon and ALL of the wwII ones are type VII and only type VII.
So I feel you and many people in these forums and other forums yearn for some variety
Even that would be awesome, some variety, anything
OK, I had to look that one up. I was not familiar with the Type XXIII. Seems a horrid waste, to field a sub with 2 whole torpedoes, and they having to be loaded externally while docked.
The Royal Navy had the O-, P- and R-Class with that configuration
The Type VII is the obvious choice for most subsims since it had the largest impact on submarine warfare.
That aside different perspectives would be interesting to play, but would probably be a niche market.
Japanese subs were used for supply runs and attacking warships. They never considered unrestricted warfare against merchant ships. Ironically US supply ships were exceptionally vulnerable and the Japanese would have had quite a weakness to exploit. Maybe wouldn't have changed the end result, but it would have caused considerable setbacks. The limited use of aircraft-carrying submarines would also be an interesting thing to portray.
Italian subs would be an interesting dynamic as early in the war Italy actually had more boats in the Atlantic than Germany did. Italian boats were inferior to their German counterparts though.
British subs operating out of Malta would be a fun campaign. Imagine being constantly under the risk of air attack, on an island mostly cut off from friendly support. It wasn't uncommon for a boat to set sail with some components missing due to shortages, even to the point of taking a boat out of service so it could be parted out to keep others running. With the Axis running through Africa, it was up to the Royal Navy submarines to keep troops and supplies from reaching Africa. Kind of a reversal of the Battle of the Atlantic.
