UBOAT

Must have mods?
Can anyone give me heads-up about the mods that are considered must have?
Or at least, really really good / improve the game.

I have more mods enabled, but I consider these to be essential, fixing crucial shortcomings of the base game.

Hey, happy to know you appreciate variable ship speed!

You have no idea, @AlexFoyle!
It's a game changer. Har. Har.

Let me know if you find anything strange. I tested it a lot before paradox released it but you never know.

It looks like the speed is maintained for ships around you ("on grid" as I would've said in EVE Online) if you save and reload, for example in the middle of an attack. Can you confirm? I didn't test this extensively.

Thanks!

Guys, this is a thread for must have mods ;)
For mod discussions of the particular mods, please use the related mod page.

Please add mod names here you think are really adding to the game without any real drawbacks.

Thanks!

Oops sorry! You're right. Got carried away there.

I'd recommend to have a look at McDewgle's collections too. Just search em in the workshop section.

Have fun!

How has no one said Iron Coffins?
And the TDC mod (If youre into that level of depth)
More sailors

-1 for "More sailors", game is balanced just fine with the complement you get.

Focus on "Must have" mods. Things that are absolutely necessary for all players. Not mods that change the game to better suit some preferences.

The compass nav mod for example. I don't consider UBOAT complete without that one.

Realistic Sinking physics - does what it says, rather than using a hitpoint based system.

Uboat Expanded - adds a ton of enemy ship types and realistic historical convoys and convoy routes.

This is down to some random tanker being in the spot on the ocean where it should be on any given day.

I've been able to look up every single ship I've sunk, by name, on the historical registry to compare its fate. I've also been able to seek out and find a ship near the gulf of mexico that I read about having been sunk by Uboat.

Uboat expanded does a lot more besides this, none of it amounts to or threatens to become a cheat, a lot of it makes things slightly more difficult. But its goal isn't to be difficult, just to add more historical accuracy.

It's a must have mod because without drastically changing the original game it adds an extensive amount of additional content in the form of ships you encounter and missions, improved convoy balance, generally making what you encounter seem more logical and less gameified. Also including enabling tons more ports.

Has UBE been updated to work with the new patch yet?
KrazyKanuck Dec 2, 2022 @ 7:38am
Iron Coffins, Deadly Skies, Better ADICS, Living Uboat, Hardcore Uboat, DarkSFX -- with all the updates with this game hard to keep on top of what works and what doesn't

Not at all since the 'vanilla' version is absolutely decent. Once you start playing with some mods, there's a good chance you'll stick to them.

Yes UBE works with the new patch now, as does sinking physics.

I second iron coffins and add

Device Energy Management

It adds things like a water purifier and heater, and also adds to the game indoor and outdoor temperatures.

This means you get a thermal layer in the water finally

I misread your question earlier as in 'must I have mods to play the game'? So, let me restate my answer. Btw, mods are subject to each player's preferences and style so what works for me might not work for you. This having been said, here's my two cents:

The three must-haves are, especially if you are looking for a bit more challenge, or you want to add realism to your game:

- TDC: makes targeting not only more realistic, but also fun. The TDC display looks so good on the screen that I would keep it there just for looks even if you're not inputting anything in the dials. The mod also provides the Kriegsmarine time chart for converting time traveled by target to distance, based on target's length (ship type).

- Which makes Enhanced ID Book particularly useful. Besides the beautifully done interface, the mod stays on the same page you left it so you do not have to leaf through it every time you want to bring the ID book back up in your targeting menu.

- Compass Navigation. The mod provides both relative and true bearing, which is a must for the 'purist' who may want to estimate target course from the periscope (which is what a lot of the U-boat captains did). And it also looks good just to look at.

- UBE would be next. I do not use it because it conflicts with Instant Research (see below).

- Device Maintenance incorporates random parts breakdowns that require repairs, which was an almost ever-present reality on U-boats (especially the engines). Your officers get 25 XP for doing repairs which helps them advance to the next level faster.

- Iron Coffin adds important elements of damage control and hydraulics that are absent from the original game. I do not like the 9 hour oxygen limit, though I understand the moder's reasoning.

I like IC, so to compensate for the above I 'cheat' by using

- Slot Machine, which adds extra storage space

- Instant Research, which allows me to get the potassium filters

From there, it basically has to do with how much visual enhancement you want, or your GPU can handle. I use
- Historical Flags and ID Booklet (warning: swastika is displayed)
- Functional RDF Antenna
- Tiger Tarnug
but there are many well-done mods (Authentic Goods, Realistic T5s, too many to list)
