T5 torpedoes are horrible
I don't know if i'm the only one who feels this way, but I recommend never researching the T5 torpedoes. They have their uses but the T3 torpedoes are generally better in every situation. The problem lies with how the ports work. When you research the T5's eventually they completely take over the torpedo supply at the home port when I much rather just use T3's. I can no longer find enough T3's to fully resupply without waiting for weeks. I have only used a T5 once to defend myself from a destroyer, but other than that all they do is ruin my ability to hunt specific ships in a convoy. This leads me to not wanting to ever research T5's again and I think that is a big problem for a game. As a game mechanic I would think that you wouldn't want an entire tech ignored from researching because it ruins the game. Obviously, if i'm in the minority than disregard this, but I just had a save ruined because all there is are ♥♥♥♥ T5 torpedoes that get in the way of sinking convoys.

TL;DR Don't research t5 torpedoes because they are ♥♥♥♥ compared to the t3's and you will never find t3's again. This is bad for the game because it leads people to ignore an entire tech which is ♥♥♥♥ game design.

Happened to me as well, I then started the patrol with T5s only. It's basically impossible to attack a convoy with those...

Perhaps researching T5 should make T3 more common as well? In addition the ability to reconfigure the homing settings of the T5 would be worthwhile as well. Set an activation delay or disable the functionality entirely.

we just need a way to have every type of torpedo available that have been researched, to the player so we can choose what we find most tactical prudent in the given situation to use.

and being able to choose what type of torp we want loaded rather than have them loaded in a pretty much random order.

Would be nice to have the port approving your choice for torpedoes. So everyone would get his torps of choice.
You don't run out of torpedos. What you need to do is buy up and stock the T1 & T2 Torpedos remaining. These torpedo slots in the shop will then be replenished with t3 torpedos

why not just let the homing ability be toggle-able? you can set the depth, why not be able to set whether it is homing on something?

Because that is not how they were made. The game is using historical data. Half the fanbase would have an fit if they didn't make it conform to real life usage.

+1 = 2

Simplest solution is to rework the torpedo purchasing panel to have each tier staggered in selection.

First layer - T1
Second Layer T2
Etc

The only thing i'd say is to have the T3's fully replace T2's after research, but that's really not that important in terms of gameplay functionality.

true its kind of weard but the real fun with those torps starts when they decide to come back :D even if you not have the loudest engine arround ;)

This is still a problem. I 100% wish I didn't research T5 torps. It's too hard to snipe with them. I've even seen one go after a destroyer that was in the opposite direction of the ship I aimed and was out of visual range.

Get the realistic T5 torpedo mod

T5's are only good for hitting destroyers and fast moving ships. I had one that was < 200m from a freighter and it suddenly changed course and hit a destroyer two km away.
