Campaign and Silent Running
Just a few quick things as I've started playing again for the first time in quite a few years.

1) Is there a defined end point for each of the campaigns i.e. a certain date? Or do they just run through until your sunk?

2) How do go fully or as close as possible to silent running? One of the assignments had an extra mission about sinking a certain ship in a convoy, this I did but as I was leaving the area and being hunted down one of my officers was still reloading the torpedo tubes which was creating a lot of noise. How do you get him to stop and reduce all other noise? I was running with blue lights on which I know tells the crew to work quietly but they were still making a lot.

Thanks

1) Go to Menu at the top right of your hud and select Campaign. In this menu you can see the start and end date of all the campaigns. Many of the 'tonnage' campaigns have multiple stages. [Stage 1 of 3] [Stage 2 of 3] [Stage 3 of 3].

2) Very simple. This drop down menu allows you to select different presets for your officer. The Mechanic preset makes the officer automatically reload and maintain torpedoes which makes noise. Select a different preset like Chief Engineer or unassigned to make him do nothing at all without your express orders.

Get into the habit of hovering your mouse over everything. If you hover your mouse over the presets it will tell you what each one does. Mechanic, Chief Engineer and so on.

1) Sorry by campaign I meant when you press new game and select a sub/start point there. Not the objectives.

2) Ah cheers, I kinda expected something like in Cold Waters that when silent running / blue light is on it'd auto stop that but makes sense, thank you.

Ah! I jumped to conclusions regarding (1) sorry about that.

Every campaign you choose from all ends on victory day, May 7th, 1945 no matter what. The only difference between the campaigns is what's written on in the description. The starting date and starting flotilla.

Select U-48 if you want the earliest possible start in 1939 a few days before war breaks out. Starting with an early campaign will give you the longest possible campaign while also give you many opportunities to 'tech up' your torpedoes, hydrophone equipment, radar detectors, conning towers with better AA guns, sonar decoys to escape detection and more.

While also allowing you the longest amount of time to level up your officers with desired skills, promote crewmen into new officers and fill out your crew full of stoic seawolves who are resistant to stress and cracking under pressure.

For the officer reloading, I tend to tell him to play cards or rest to stop him from reloading as the silent running doesn't prevent it

You can create Role presets for your officers, create one named Mechanic SR and remove torpedo warming and loading maybe even repairs then switch to that when you want them to stop being morons but still be useful.
Aside from that Blue light, Gyrocompass off, Electric Dive Planes off, Engines off or max forward 1 is as quiet as it gets.
