I'm still learning about the LUT and FAT torpedo's, but when you fire them at a enemy ship, and they miss, they follow a pattern, and it follows the sound of the ships engines.
Basically you can fire a LUT or a FAT torpedo and it will track the sound of the ship and it will hit it. Some kind of homing torpedo.

But i think you have to be carefull, because it just hits any ships they ''hear''
or in a worst case scenario it can even turn back and hit your own uboat if your engines make any sound i think.

But you should ask other guys in this forum about it, i'm still learning about it.

LUT and FAT are pattern search dumb torpedoes, only T5 torps follow engine sound.

Thank you, I was wrong then haha.
I always keep sticking with the good old basic T1 steam torpedo's.

I hate the T2's, only good at stealth.

T3 torpedo's combined with LUT or FAT seem to be the ideal choise? T5 are expensive I think.

look at Litely Salted's YouTube videos on LUT / FAT. All will be revealed, Grasshopper.

If you play with crew solving solution you dont need these, just use T1 and T2 and you be good.
Crew always hit.

FAT torpedoes you can choose whether they'll turn left or right. They will run for the distance you set, then do a 180 degree turn either left or right. Then they'll run for the set distance, turn around again, and so on until they run out of fuel.

LUT allows you to choose distance, direction and the angle they'll turn. So instead of just going back and forth they'll follow whatever pattern you set. This gives you some more options for the kind of path you want the torpedo to take.

T5s follow engine noise. Fire it into the convoy and it'll probably hit something. No guarantees it'll be what you aimed at though.

Yeah, the T5 Zaunkönig basically run for a little and then go active and search for the next engine sound they hear, so if you have a guarded convoi, they will most likely go on a corvette or destroyer.
I would only use them if using the periscope is too dangerous or you're already forced under water and want to hit something before you disappear.
Also useful for defensive purposes, like when you operate in shallow waters where you would rather kill an alerted escort than trying to escape.

IIRC the Germans calibrated the Zaunkonig specifically so it would home in on escorts. The idea being that one Uboat in a wolfpack could take down the escorts and leave that part of the convoy exposed for the others to attack.

The Allies fielded a decoy to counter it pretty much immediately after it entered service so historically speaking it didn't help the Germans all that much.

The germans realised quickly that the t5 was to slow for destroyers and also lost its target if the escort just changed the speed, so they calibrated it for freighters for "blind" or long shots.

The decoy worked good as countermeasure for the t5, but it worked even better as a homing beacon for u-boats. Also it took some time to bring it out and it slowed the escort down.

T1 are flexible and versatile, I sometimes load T2 to allow the game to take longer time in port so I can have more T1 delivered for my missions :D
