Whats up with friendly U-Boats?

Every time I find a friendly boat its highly likely it just goes in a circle endlessly

The ones in mine dont. They leave/exit the port and sail around. I have yet to see one engage an enemy though.

They tend to do it in open sea

If a friendly appears in your combat zone you can click on it and order it to Attack, defend or retreat.

I was making my first attack on a large convoy yesterday... I went in at around 90 degrees, and the escorts were circling and depth charging some spot nearby south of me. I was thinking that's where they thought I was for some reason, but after sinking my freighter, I took a closer look and noticed there were two other uboats down there. It was pretty nifty. But, I did notice a uboat going in circles at port another time, too.

p.s. It turned out the ship I sank was carrying tea. It was a major upset to the British, and I felt kind of bad about that.
