Likely was flying a false flag on its way out to the UK and kept flying it after on its way home. I would expect it would have been a crude oil tanker as the UK needed all the fuel it could get at this time.
Ergo, any tanker headed to the UK is a valid target by default.
Also, neutral ships do not run or call for help. If you approach a neutral vessel and they raise the alarm, start to zig-zag or send out an SOS message? Then you just found a smuggler who couldn't keep his composure.
But wasn't flying a ship under a false neutral flag not a war crime or something?
Did the Allies not got punished for it after WW2. Oke the allies were ''the good guys'' but that doesn't change the fact that they also broke the rules.
Nobody had the right to fly a false neutral flag.
But both sides take advantage of the others honour, some skippers still did the right thing (to their detriment)
What's missing in this game is the ability to radio ships to abandon so you can torpedo them without loss of life. Sometimes they might agree, sometimes they might agree then open fire etc
If you are interrested in stuff like this, read stuff about the Lusitania in WWI for example.
The brits never shyed away from putting civilians in line, smuggeling or misdeclaring cargo.
I had a swiss neutral cargo vessel shooting the crap out of me the other day. Well, that happend.
