Sounds like you tried to fire a salvo without putting in the correct distance to the target.
40 meter dispersion at 100 meters away? Wide spread angle
40 meter dispersion at 1,000 meters away? Narrow spread angle
maybe it helps
I am using TDC manual.
edit: just saw you recent post. on the TDC switch right side lever on (blue indication light off) and the bottom switch off (white indication light off). set speed 0kn. and on the torpedo selection screen switch the knob to the green position. you should now fire directly at the direction your periscope is looking at
