TIL Das Boot was not originally a feature length film but a 6 part 1985-1987 miniseries?
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081834/

Yep, originally Das Boot is a 6 hour, 6 part mini series. Theres been a ton of versions, like a 2 hour 20 minute cinema version, but also a Directors Cut 3.5 hour cinema version, supervised by the director.

IMO the latter is the best variant; 2 hours are obviously too little, but the TV-series has issues with pacing. Its too bloated and the break between the episodes is a bit artificial.

I heard of a 6h version, never found anything like that. Guess people meant that. I first was really surprised by the length, imagining watching a movie for a quarter of a day. But this makes more sense now.

I could never seem to find it either, I think people might be referring to the 6 hours of of the series.

Now I will want ot search the interwebs for those 6 hours :)

I saw a 2 x 2.5 hour version on cable one day. The first part ends when Werner passes out in his bunk. I thought it was the end of the movie.

Look for "Shogun" from the 80s, its nearly 9 hours long and its only so "short" because a taifun destroyed the movie set village

Loved that series. Imagine if they had made it into a 2.5 hour long movie; it would have been a swordfighting flic haha
The book is fun as well - its long but reads quickly
