Real charts.
This is what the German charts looked like that were used during the war by the German Navy. Would be fun if they could replace the existing ones and make the game more realistic.

There's this mod:

But I imagine you mean looking like the historical maps with the depth soundings and so on. That would be nice, I agree.

good catch Zerokill

i wish to have option for historical maps in game.
(even if i admit, current maps in game are more pretty :steammocking:)

And 2 important modifications need to be done
(for those who like to play 'realistic')

1 - currently the "Depth under Keel Gauge" device is useless,
Because you can just read the depth of any point on the map by moving mouse pointer on it.
( on the historical map, the scattered numbers were depth surveys )

2 - The map in game is too much accurate,
(I'm sure they made it from satellite images)
on historical map there is no such details (no coastal outline less than 1 kilometer long )

That depends on the scale and quality of the map.
Just look at the map of the irish sea in the link, how much details you can see there.
The shape of the coastline was very important for navigation befor GPS became common

The good old days! One aesthetic difference between the old charts and our own is that those charts had to all be drawn by hand - no CAD drafting stations. Having to crank out maps by hand puts limits on what you can have in the map, and those limits generally aren't respected when you use computer software.

That too, and some cartographers are true master craftsmen (and women), whereas others are just journeyman (and woman) draughtsmen (and women). I used to have a buddy whose hobby was drawing maps by hand, they were beautiful works of art. The last I heard of him someone had thrown a live hand grenade into his bed, which is something you don't hear much about anymore with COVID.

In Sweden we never forget this...
The case of the stranded Soviet submarine
On October 27th of 1981, a foreign submarine ran aground outside the small coastal city of Karlskrona in southern Sweden. The incident started an 11-day long diplomatic tug of war between Sweden and the Soviet Union.

On this lin you can se the amp showing where they hit ground.

You right.
I compared Irish map and google map,
The level of detail and accuracy is amazing.
