UBOAT
Silent Hunter 5 - The wolves of Steel mod
Is what I play as a substitute, which I will gladly uninstall when the new update releases. Uboat is the most "alive" submarine game I have ever played. Nothing can come close to it by my standards.

My main qualm with wolves of steel/SH5 is that the controls feel so clunky compared to UBOAT. I tried getting into it but it's pretty tedious and time consuming even with the automation

That said, i think that world felt way more "alive" - patrols of stukas and other friendly vessels, the kiel canal, complicated standing orders, etc. hopefully we get stuff like that some day

sh5 wos is an absolute classic
I liked the original (patched) Silent Hunter 5. Never cared for hardcore modpacks that made life so realistic it sucked the fun out of it.

That being said I DO like how lots of those things I hated in Wolves if Steel are implemented in U-Boat. And I would love to see more of them without turning it into a hardcore time sink where the slightest error renders hours of gameplay obsolete.

I especially miss the upgrade system for our officers. Giving them points to spend in order to increase loading speed, accuracy or reliability boost for our torpedoes.
Is it worth to play the SIlent Hunter franchise for the first time if I own this game?

Silent Hunter 3 (with Living SH3 mod) gives you a bigger variety of U-boats to sail, and Silent Hunter 4 (with Fall of the Rising Sun mod) takes you to the Pacific in US fleet boats. There is less of an emphasis on crew management in them than U-boat.
Was wondering as well which SH I should try...
I'm a new UBoat player, didn't play sub sims for years, last one should be SH2...

Thanks 👍
I tend to play sh5 wos a lot more, it's just a lot more immersive and the real navigation addon makes hunting convoys a lot more challenging than right clicking on them ;)
It feels a lot more like you are stalking your prey, in Uboat I just sail into a convoy and start blasting

Silent Hunter 3 with Grey Wolves Expansion mod + SH3 Commander have been my go to uboat sim for years. Good level of challenge and realism. Hopefully when UBOAT properly releases it can come close to matching or surpassing the SH games. Absolute classics.

I use a widescreen fix to play in 4k. It looks as good as you can expect a game from 2005 to look in this day and age. Modded it looks acceptable imo but just don't expect for it to look anywhere near UBOAT's level however the gameplay does still hold up at least for me. This is the steam guide I use to get it running: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1328154608 The Grey Wolves mod & Sh3 Commander are separate installs but easy enough to find by google.

Yes it is a classic. And a good one at that when modded to the latest WoS mod found at SubSims : https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=238315
And for those who Played SH5 and dumped it, try it again Modded also use their additional programs & mods to tweak your Subs & game play. And a nice thing about those programs, is that once done, You can save it. No matter how many new games or different Subs you use, it's SAVED. Yes in the beginning it was faulty but with the great guys from SubSims you do have a classic that's still fun to play.

Isn't realism that as the captain, you shouldn't use the TDC manually, but it was another one's job to do so?
