Engine gear (yours) also impacts how far away you can hear things.
Keep these things in mind as you rely on your hydrophones. I've picked up large convoys (33+ ships) from over 100 nautical miles and missed solitary vessels until the periscope caught their smoke on the horizon.
And yes, the circle changes depending on the speed, but so does the indication in the hydrophone and it does not match.
I am sorry I misunderstood you at first. Maybe mention it over in their bug reports?

The circles are of course depending on some boat and crew parameters.
Btw. the energy level of the officer also has an influence on the range.
