Could you make sure that the radius of the passive sonar also matches the specified range?
Range according to the listening room approx. 10 km, display according to the map 6.5 km.

The circle is misleading. At least in my game the hydrophone picks up contacts outside the circle on a regular basis

The circle also is affected by your speed. It's showing 6.5 at Forward 1, what does it show at All Stop? What does it show at All Stop and a Radioman with the +25% range skill?

Size of the convoy has a HUGE impact on how far away you'll hear them.
Engine gear (yours) also impacts how far away you can hear things.

Keep these things in mind as you rely on your hydrophones. I've picked up large convoys (33+ ships) from over 100 nautical miles and missed solitary vessels until the periscope caught their smoke on the horizon.
The circle is only for the direct detection area. This does not mean that individual drivers can also be located outside of it BUT the circle does not match the values of the hydrophone. If 10 km for lone drivers are specified should also be displayed a 10 km radius for the circle that confuses totally. Maybe it is also only quite banal and the circle refers to miles. 10 km is 6.5 miles (not a nautical mile), what a coincidence that a radius of 6.5 km is displayed to me.

And yes, the circle changes depending on the speed, but so does the indication in the hydrophone and it does not match.

You're missing the point. That ring is not a hard and fast rule, it's more of a guideline, really. All of them are, in my experience. If you're getting variances that the interference I know about doesn't cover, then maybe there's interference I don't know about. Maybe surface noise, if you're at periscope depth. Honestly if it's bugging you that much, and not saying it shouldn't, you'd have to look under the hood, so to speak. Dig into the code and see what's going on.
I understand your approach but a simple player who is not familiar with the details should get identical values for the hydrophone. The specification varies, the circle can also vary but both values should match. That you can see farther than you can hear (with the radius displayed too small is generally already wrong. I have spent many hours in submarine simulations and yes, the point bothers me. Especially because it wasn't always like that and it was patched in. But yes, that is my personal feeling.

You got me curious, so I went looking, and you're not wrong. The values don't just not match, there's about a 40% difference between what's listed at the hydrophone and the ring shown on the map. I just never noticed. It must be something they tinkered with in the last few updates because I think I remember it matching in preview 10. It's been a couple weeks since I sat down and seriously played.

I am sorry I misunderstood you at first. Maybe mention it over in their bug reports?
All good😂😉. I think in 128 it was actually still normal

HI,

Circle 1:
The range is the area in which ships moving at a usual speed can be detected. (displayed Hydrophone circle)

Circle 2:
If a ship is moving fast and is noisy, it can be detected outside this range up to the maximum range

Circle 3:
The maximum range is displayed in the device details

The circles are of course depending on some boat and crew parameters.
Btw. the energy level of the officer also has an influence on the range.

Cheers Ruby

But this is not comprehensible, since they would have made better 2 circles (light/dark) incl. explanation than only the small one and simply ignore the range beyond.
