I did not like the silly whale noises whenever the Uboats were shown. I thought the Uboat broadcasts was a bit of a cheap amateurish addition. I did not like how there was no mention of the arctic convoys. Other than that it was enjoyable enough.

Inconsistencies ?

Well if you want the actual quote en quote ... The Ship thats being use is not even USS Greyhound ..

Hanks is onboard of USS Kid instead .
This is adressed in this interview, I think :

Ships have names, but also codenames. Greyhound is just the codename, and they simplified it all in order to not confuse the spectators with multiple names for each ship.

Many choices in such movies (and "realistic" space movies, etc) are made so that the non-specialist can easily follow the story. A 90 min movie cannot afford the same tutorials as games or technical digressions as books. And cannot alienate 90% of its public. It has to strike a certain balance between "readability" and accuracy.

I for one loved these sounds accompanying the u-boat shots. It conveyed a bit of the blind terror, horror and danger that they represented for the ships.

Which was entirely deflated by the retarded "internet trolling" of radio communications, yes.

I am really wondering why a U-boat decided to surface and gun the destroyer

Google it , in fact U boat surface and take down more ships by using their Deck machine guns as oppose to torpedo.

There cant carry a truck load of torpedo in a cramp space of U boat so yeah the deck gun does acts as their secondary weapon.
i thoght it strange, but I talked with a Navy Officer Sub, and he told me this too.
WW2 Uboat attacked a lot using their guns
Gun attacks happened very frequently early in the war, and were also used as part of the prize regulations (stopping ships by gunfire and boarding them to inspect) that were in effect at that time. Hitler was very adamant about keeping to the prize regulations early in the war as an overture to the British, but that changed very rapidly when the prospects of peace with England became slim. Even so, after unrestricted submarine warfare was in effect in early 1940 or so, the deck gun was still used quite a bit in remote areas on small single ships or those wounded by torpedo.

What you see in Greyhound however is absolutely not historically correct. No U-boat would have ever dreamed of using the gun in the proximity of an escort that outgunned it (ie any escort). Unless of course in desperation, forced to surface and had no choice.
