UBOAT
Torpedo bug?
All of the sudden none of my torpedoes are hitting. I've been sinking ships left and right until now. No matter what I do, the torpedoes are always launching straight at the ship and missing by a mile. I play realistically, I input the torpedo solutions myself and have had nothing but success so far. I identify ship as closely as I can, calculate the speed, distance and bearing, I am at 6 cables running parallel to the ship, matching its speed. I've tried getting closer, going farther, different angles of attack, and no matter what I do, the torpedoes end up well behind the target. In some cases I launched at almost point blank range, and the torps appeared to go right through the ship on the map. I've tried everything from 1 to 6 meters draught.

6 cables (1 kilometer) is fairly close, I agree you should be hitting the target, especially at that range!

Regarding torpedo depth, you should know that the draught listed in the recognition manual does not line up with the torpedo depth in-game. This is a known issue that the devs need to fix. Your best bet is to leave torpedo depth set at 1.5 to 2 meters.

Regarding torpedo speed, usually when a torpedo misses in front of a target, that means your speed estimate was too fast. If the torpedo misses behind the target, that means your speed estimate was too slow.

99% of all merchants in Uboat move at 7 knots, unless they're alarmed! In which case they will first slow down to an almost dead stop (to throw off any torpedoes already heading towards them). Then they will full-throttle and begin a zig-zag pattern.

Because of this it's essential to try and time your torpedoes so they all arrive at each of their targets almost simultaneously. But if that's not the issue then I would defer back to the speed estimates.

If we knew how you arrive at your speed, course and range estimates maybe we'll find the issue together?

The ship I've been targeting, I estimated to be travelling at 7 knots, which as you said is fairly standard. It is currently night, there is no alarm. Generally I've been using the games plotter tools to calculate a solution, but in this case I went through the motions myself to see what was going on. I identified the ship, ordered all stop, started the chronometer and waited for the ship to pass the reticle from bow to stern, divided the ships length by the time taken, and multiply the result by 2 to get a speed of 7.13 knots. For distance I rely on the games stadimeter tool, since I'm not sure of the AP's radian values at the different zooms, and theres no distance chart available. AOB i determine with map tools, drawing the lines and figuring out the angle myself, however in this case i am at damn near perfect 90 degrees bow right. I've already warmed up the torps, and have tried both the T1 and T2 and both do the same thing. I've put the AP at the center of the ship, I've tried the bow, I've tried aiming 2 to 3 ship lengths ahead, but each time the torps launch straight at the ship with no leading, like the calculator thinks the ship is standing still.

Are you kidding me? Lmao I'm facepalming so hard right now it's causing me actual pain. Even when I was scoring hits, it always seemed to be damn close, and never where I aimed the periscope. If this fixes things for me you have earned my gratitude. Unreal lol. This just makes me want to play wolfpack instead.

Or get the compass navigation mod and TDC mod, they're really great U_U <3

Im looking at those right now

Well that solved it. You are the man, that was so frustrating! Just scored a direct hit with both torps after seeing your vid.

So, is this a bug, or did the devs think AOB was too confusing, and decided to simplify it to course instead?
Dewgle Jan 10, 2021 @ 2:05pm
Glad I could help, sir! And hope you like those mods. Here's the manual for the TDC mod
http://www.dev.wewh.de/ub/manual/TDC-Manual.pdf

The reason the compass navigation mod pairs together so nicely with the TDC mod is that the CN mod adds true bearings to all your map tools, and of course, always shows your true heading, which opens up a lot more fun map plotting techniques!

Btw, I just want to say this is what's great about simulator communities. You can actually ask a question without the immediate response being " GIT GUD"
