Bright green represents compartments that are dry while dark green is similar to how DOT (damage over time) works in other games. Any part of the ship's floatbility meter that is dark green will drop over time. And any part of the bar that is black is completely already flooded.
As soon as the ship takes damage, the crew will immediately begin damage control in an attempt to save the ship. Running the bilge pumps while also attempting to block the leaks.
You may also notice in some cases that the bright green section immediately turning dark green as soon as the crew begins to abandon ship. This indicates a complete loss of damage control as the rest of the ship begins to flood.
You're not wrong, ships in this game can sink very quickly, I just wanted to point that out to avoid any misconceptions and to ensure that you're gauging how quickly the ship sinks based on when it first takes damage, not from when ship's floatability meter is completely empty.
I don't know how long you are playing this game or how many ships you sunk, but I've made it until 1945 and I can assure you that it can vary a lot.
Indeed, some ships do sunk in a few seconds if correctly hit. Some others need a few minutes to sink. And sometimes, you even only do minimal damages with a torp and you need to keep getting at it to finally sunk it.
One time, I broke a carrier in 2 pieces with only a T5 torp and it immediately sank. Another time, I got it with 2 torps and it needed a really long time to sink. As there was no enemies anymore, I took my time to observe it going slowly under.
What I'm saying is that perhaps you were just lucky until now and you need to wait a bit more to draw some general conclusions...
But as I said before, I don't know how many ships you sunk and how long you are playing the game ;-)
Having to fire 3 torpedo to sink a 2000 GRT ship, though, is annoying.
a prime example is seeing a ship split in half like that and take not even 30 seconds to sink, it should take atleast like 2 minutes AT LEAST to sink that ship because of bouyancy, it shouldnt just fall through the water like a boulder. there was an SH5 mod that did this really well actually and i moved over to UBOAT for a more managed simulation and all that but its immersion breaking trying to watch these ships because it almost look like its being pulled down by the kraken
