Modded SH3 holds the top, no doubt. SH4 and SH5 are far inferior, with SH5 is going ahead of SH4... But only with Wolves of Steel modpack

UBOAT is... Well, it still has A LOT of flaws and feels gamey at the some points, but I suggest you to try. At least, we can wait till it *gets* released and whatnot

Well, SH3 has much more mods and many of them are INGREDIBLY good.

Not to mention SH3 also has more subs compared to SH5 (SH5 has only one Typ VIIb/c - SH3 has IIa, IId, VIIb, VIIc, VIIc/41, IXb, IXc, IXd2, XXI and even more with mods)

Regarding first person view... Indeed, SH3 is all about combat and patrolling, but with simplified crew management and rather poor interactivity - so if you to it, you definitely should look at SH5/UBOAT

I can't suggest you where to buy SH5 nowadays, however - I have an old DVD-box version, which I bought ages ago...

give the modding community in uboat a chance maybe?
its modding capabilites goes far beyond then what was possible in SH

SH3: Large variety of U-boats and good simulation, but ancient and needs a lot of jiggery-pokery to get going on modern systems. SH4: Set in Pacific theatre, needs Trigger Maru or Real U-boat mega mods for a satisfactory experience. SH5 plays best with modern systems and Wolves of Steel Mega mod turns it into a worthy U-boat simulator.

Even if so, it could take hell lot of time before we get something really interesting. Right now I can name only ONE that deserves something - TDC mod by Freekoly and ZNC. So..

I think the Steam version of SH5 can't be modded, you'd be safer getting a cheap copy on Ebay.

@Baronewbietutsdone: I think you've got all you need there to get going. Good hunting! and remember that unstable branch is...unstable 🙂.

Modded Silent Hunter 3 for sure.

I personally didn't like SH4, but loved both SH 3 and 5 (though like everyone else 3 was much better). I think 5 was a different team and rushed, though to be honest it was such a long time ago. I didn't like 4 as I much prefer the german uboats, ever since the silent service days back in the oh 80's

As for UBOAT, I've loved what I've seen so far (and glad I backed it) and hope the dev really make this the next best sub sim game, it's truly on it's way there. The mods & community are great.

The two mods you listed above are great, and also some none gameplay mods are good - e.g. the Gramophone music mods - I love listening to the oldies as I sail along.

I would suggest you try UBOAT without mods first, get a feel for the game, the targeting, then when your comfortable with that, install the TDC and play with the real time options.

Enjoy the game, and if you have more questions, don't be afraid to ask. Great community as I said!

Lets see, SH5 with Wolves mod is super realistic, excessivly so in some cases, like with having to navigate by the stars depending on the difficulty level. But, it does not have nearly the amount of customization that 3 does, and in the end even with the wolves mod, its still really really buggy.

sh5 also has the rpg aspect, in terms of skills for the crew, that many think shouldnt be locked behind rpg gameplay in a sim. some people are into that, me ive never played long enough for it to matter.

TLDR, Sh5 with wolves mod is the most immersive expirince by far. Between the attack disc, first person everything, navigation by stars and dead reckoning, and above all, a working enigma machine. if you so choose, you have to actualyl operate a fully simulate enigma decoder machine to correctly and manually decode your encrypted orders from high command. it really gets you in the game. so much fun (the first 3 times, after that...eh) Ports are heavily defended with eplacements like canons etc

Sh3 GWX is the most expansive, most playable area, most campaigns, most subs, most everything. Arguably more realistic with the Ai and what armaments enemy destroyers equip over the years etc. Ports do not feature canons, but do have patrols usually in the form of small tralwers with canons that will sink you if you pop up and didnt notice them.

Both feature nets and mines that must be avoided to sneak into a port.

For me though, uboat is a happy middle ground between immersion and "i just wanna sink something". sim aspects, especially when im cowering in the conning tower as depth charge blow all around in first person becuase i took the gibralter mission like a moron. but it also remembers that its a game, some sacrafices are made, and if you dont like them, the modder have got you covered.

Im a SH3 vet. I loved and modded the game a lot. My first Uboat sim was Aces of the deep. I prefer 100% realism. SH4 and 5 didn't met my expectations, too arcadish and no good ui. I was really excited when i heard of Uboat. Wolfpack was also a candidate, but its gameplay is very narrow and only single mission based.

Uboat has the potential to become the best subsim for years. Atm it's ea and so it's still unbalanced here and there and misses content. Also the sim aspects are a bit underrepresented, but they become more with each patch. I had serious fun for about 40h gameplay. Im just testing the new patches and mod the game since, as there is no real career mode yet, only sandbox.

Watch some videos and decide on your own. I can recommend Uboat in the current state if you are not too deep in sims and like to have some arcade-like help during the game. This will become optional in future though :) it's a very promising game. Especially due to the crew management and the fpp.

If you want a real 100% subsim (without crew management, full 3d boat and fpp) play SH3 with WAC mod.

In modern/cold war era submarine sims, Dangeous Waters is the most realistic one

SH3 WAC mod for fpp, noted, thank you. Most simmers use GWX3 GOLD for SH3?

Did you use TWoS for SH5?
If yes, was SH5 with TWoS less realistic than SH3 with GWX or with other mods you used?

Why is SH5 less realistic than SH3 and why is SH3 less arcadish than SH5?
Sorry for the questions, but I really wish to know the details. :)

No, i threw SH5 into the corner and never touched it again. I followed the progress of TWoS, but it doesnt convinced me.

Realism:

Its the different concepts of the game. SH5 was for another audience, than SH3 was made for. Sh3 filled a niche, was meant to be a subsim. SH5 was almost an interactive movie more for the casual players. So, its more arcadish.

Arcade comes from the beginning of computergames. Many of the first computer games where not for having a mind orientated challenge, but for quick to understand gameplay and fast progress. Very low level gameplay, like pong. Difficulty resulted only from giving the game more and more enemies, faster moving elements or less time to achieve the win. All of these games found their way into the public by being an arcade machine in the late 70s.

Arcade elements in modern games are for easy to handle gameplay, like you have less damage, more powerful weapons, a lot of tips, no need of careful progress, overall less things to care for. All in all, arcadish games want the player not to think too much and concentrate on having fun with a fast pace progress. Call of Duty is a typical arcade shooter. Its more like an interactive movie. Naturally a sim is the other way round. You need to think about every step you do and act carefully with strategic skill. As it was in real life of a sub captain ;) So in games like SH3 you have slow paced gameplay with the need for strategic thinking, its challenging.

Which Supermod you choose, is your decision. I tested GWX (Gold), Living Silent Hunter and War Ace Campaign. WAC was the best sim like constructed mod with a full uboat interior. But they all lift SH3 to a complete new level and provide extremly challenging gameplay.

Dear community!

Hi there!

I'm new to the submarine simulation genre and I wish to ask you guys which simulator do you like the most.

I'm mostly interested in WW2, but I'm open to suggestions.

I eventually plan to buy a few of them
(so far my list is UBOAT, Silent Hunter 3-4-5)
in the near future, I just wish to read about your opinions about submarine simulators.

Which one is the most realistic simulation, which one has the best mods, which one do you prefer, etc.

I heard about the Silent Hunter series and took a short look into some of the videos
(which I'll keep doing in the coming days)
about modded Silent Hunter 3, 4, and 5 and UBOAT.

While i keep googling, reading and watching videos about submarine simulators, I thought I also write here and ask your opinions.

Thank you in advance to responding to this post and sorry for my mediocre english.

Most realistic is sonalist games with modern subs... LA class seawolf and russian subs.
But they are pretty old, but if you want realism that is.

Long time Subsim-er. Played Silent Hunter waaaaaay back in the days of the Speccy, SH3, SH4, SH5 & UBOAT.
SH3 + GWX Mod is a superb game though a tad dated graphically. Immersion is good but with no 3D crew.
SH4 + OpMonsun Mod transfers it from US Pacific to the German Atlantic campaign if that's what you want. Updated graphics from SH3 though somewhat pastel-y IMHO. Damage modelling in targets is good.
SH5 + Grey Wolves is excellent and a good forerunner of UBOAT but bear in mind that, to the best of my current knowledge, it STILL requires Ubisoft's UPlay DRM software to get going even if you're playing offline. Attempts were made to crack it but I believe they all came to nought.
UBOAT + Workshop Mods (TDC, Real FLags, Compass Navigation etc.) . . . I'm enjoying it so far, having resisted the temptation to fast travel everywhere (never was a fan of speeding the time up). Expanded Crew Management is a bugger to set up initially but once you've got your head round it it can be almost totally automated even on your first voyage. I tend to start the game up and minimise it to Taskbar and let it run in the background 'til I need to do summat ;)
