is it a commander a radio guy ?

That skill is RNG based, like the runner, connection and language skill.

My mechanic has linguist skills. One of my leaders has merchant skills as should due to navigator skills for leaders only that both merchant and navigator skills are to help improve questioning boarded freighters.

What I did was keep on restarting new game until I'm satisfied with certain skills for certain officers. I'm still waiting for mods that would allow us to select special skills for every officers without dealing with randomness perverting our time.

Do you mean those skills can randomly be given to an officer when that officer first appears in the game (e.g. when starting a new career or when a new officer is given to the player as a reward for completing a mission)?

Or do you mean those skills can randomly appear in the skill tree for an officer?

....Or both of these?

@Jimmy Fattocks, don't forget these skills also appear when you promote a sailor into an officer.

Thanks, I'll bear that in mind.

But again, do you mean those skills can only randomly be given to an officer when he is created (new career / player is awarded a new officer / player promotes a sailor to officer)?

Or can those skills also randomly be included as an option in an officer's skill tree?

The linguist is one of the 'perk' skills that only appear when an officer is generated.

There is something you can do though if you want to cheese it.

  1. Save your game
  2. Give yourself a hundred reputation points with the 'Reputation XXX' command
  3. Promote each and every single crewmen under your command, doesn't matter whether you pick leader, engineer or radioman
  4. Write down the name of each crewmen who has a trait that you want. Whether he's an expert, a merchant, linguist etc, etc, etc.
  5. Load back to your original save file before you gave yourself a hundred reputation points
  6. You know have a magic list of names of crewmen with skills you want

This doesn't work anymore. The skills are obviously randomized the exact moment you get/promote etc. the officer.
I tried it with the two spare crewman you have at the start of a new game. Each reload they got a different skill.

They have to be boarded, Red_Seven.

All crewmen at the recruiter will get randomized each time you reload your save.

tl; dr; honestly I don't know what's the craze with linguists. Just get an english speaking guy, a spanish speaking guys and youre set. EZ. Maybe french too.
