It's "Herr Kaleun" it's short for a rank in the german navy (kapitanleutnant) that a captain might have. Apparently it is a very specific rank and this is only common in uboat games because the captain in "das boot" happened to have that rank and thus his crew called him this.

It is common in u-boat games, cos it was commen that the commander of a u-boat was a Kaleun

Im assuming its similar to the difference between Commander and Captain, having smaller crews I guess Uboat command was somewhat beneath someone withe rank of Captain? at leastmore senior ones

Kaleun, only used by the crew his crew on uboats, sboats or similar small ships, everyone else would use his full rank or say captain, if they knew he was a captain of a ship.

Kaleun is Lieutenant in the US-Navy
the ranks in the marine:
Leutnant zur See
Oberleutnant zur See
Kapitänleutnant / Lieutenant
Koevettenkapitän / Lieutanent Commander
Fregattenkäpitän / Commander
Kapitän zur See / Captain

A Kapitän z.S. commmand a ship, not a boat (in the very rare case a Kapitän z.S. commands a boat, the boat is a ship)

It was always up to personal preference to either use Kaleu or Kaleun. Has nothing to do with pre, mid or post war.
