Which position is closest to the "XO" Executive Officer?
The Watch Officer or Chief Boatswain? Which one is closest to today's Executive Officer, below the captain?

It's the 1 WO (1. Wachoffizier /First Watch Officer).
Deputy Commander, assuming command, if the commander failed.

The Boatswain is only a petty officer, like a sergant, not an officer like a captain.

The LI is also direct below the captain (LI in command over the technical part of the boat, 1.WO over the nautical part), so it could happen that the LI take over the command if he had a higher rank than the 1.WO

Do you have any source?
To my knowledge, the 1. WO and then the 2. WO replaced the commander. The LI was usually not included in tactical and nautical decisions and had no corresponding training.

I cant remember the source, but there was a u-boat, the capaitn was Korvettenkapitän, the LI was Kaleun and the 1.WO only Oberleutnant z.S.
