How do I tell somebody to cook some food?
In the middle of torpedo attack. Discipline dropping fast. So I move some extra food from storage. But nobodies cooking anything. How do I assign somebody to start cooking nobody seems to have that option.

The radio man by default has a cooking hobby skill.. assign him to the galley using any click or drop down menu method.

But he is not necessary, as the bonus gets larger when you add the 2nd food into the galley, (not storage next to galley, but actually into the galley), and bigger when you enter the 3rd food type into the galley etc..

Hi, I had a total of 3 foods in the galley and radio man does not have any option (in his drop-down) todo with cooking.

My mistake, I just checked - you must have a guy named Kohler.. when you assign him to cooking you will get a green plus symbol meaning he is the one.

And did you see the discipline dropdown have an increase with 2 foods? Try 3, and 4, you will get bigger bonus.

If you're in a combat situation, it's likely no one will be cooking. Pans scraping can be heard after all. Best you can do is see what's causing discipline to drop and change what you can, otherwise focus on the task at hand and then making your escape.

It might be a good idea for the devs to model in efforts to provide an example to the crew. A hydrophone operator noted seeing Otto Kretschmer calmly reading a book during a depth charge attack. At first he thought he was out of his mind reading during a crisis, but he noticed that Kretschmer was holding the book upside down! By displaying an image of calm, it inspired the crew to be calm as well. There have been other cases of officers assigning small tasks to the men to keep them busy and get their mind off the danger.

When in combat or alarm, you cannot do stuff that boosts morale (like playing cards, playing music on radio, cooking). That's why you don't see those options.

Does your definition of "cannot do stuff that boosts" include changing lights? Decreasing depth? Lowering the workload to make them quieter and happier?

That doesn't really boost discipline, but it does slow down the rate that it declines.

I used the word "boost" for anything that gives a "green positive" to the discipline. The other stuff you mentioned enhances the negative (red) drop in the discipline. Changing lights could be considered a passive boost since officers aren't actively needing to do it as a role or job, but that's about it. However, that can also have a negative affect if using the wrong lights (using white lights while in combat, or at night, or combat at night). The "depth" either does nothing, or has a negative effect.

Good points :

So giving a new player all the helpful related / relevant advice in the context of their question, should include boosts and anything else that helps.. :)

Ok, so because I was in combat there was no option for cooking. I see. It drops fast though. I entered the sector with 100% discipline. Went straight for these 3 transporters (it's the mission with the Empire Explore) and by the time I was calculating torpedo solutions discipline was down to 20% or so. And I was never lower than periscope depth. Well that's the game I guess.

Thanks for all the replies!

Regarding not being able to do anything that boosts discipline: I was confused that when I surfaced and asked the radio-man to tune into Gibraltar it said something like "Alert!" in red. (I hadn't sunk the 3rd transporter but it was fleeing and I had already shot 6 torpedoes at it all missed). Anyway now I know what the "alert!" means.

The alert status remains as long as any enemy is within the ranges of any crew looking, using sights, sonar, radar reception.. and notice once all enemy are out of range, your time compression choices are regained, and then you can make that TV show you always wanted about cooking !

Learn to manage disipline during alarm and you should never have problems,,, period, You have to make sure you only assign crew needed for the task you need, and make sure you have no idle crew at any time, and displine never get to a problem.

Did a raid on cardiff, had alarm for long time, sank 3 ships, left harbour with destroyers chasing, didnt get down to 20..., I managed to drive myslf on shore though, but the men never budged,,,..

I actually find it hard to break crew down to zero unless I delebretly want tooo, and in this game, you will want too have a few crew breakdons, it can reveal what kind of characters is on your ship, people with faint heart, that can risk diying during stress, or a coward, or even the tough bastards sea wolfes,,, Maybe even other things when devs expand the games content... The going down to zero isnt the end of the world either, deal with it, knock out a crewmeber, or try to calm him down,,,whatever, excute him next time he dont cook good because hes was reaveled coward on last patrol...or replace

Oh, yeah, I saw that. During that time when discipline went down a crew member was revealed to be a "Sea Wolf". I was quickly skimming over the message text and at first thought they had caught a spy on board or something (a sea rat??) I don't know why I thought that. It happened in the middle of my first attack setup and that pressure music was going with the discipline going down... The cook was also seen ruining eggs or something? How do you even catch people not doing their job? I made the cook clean the toilet. Then I figured that was a mistake because I couldn't get anybody else to cook and he was now occupied cleaning toilets (I guess). Shooting a cook for messing up eggs seemed excessive. I understand they were Nazis but jeeez.

How do I simultaneously only assign crew to task needed but also keep them all busy?
