For the spy missions, they usually take you far enough away that there isn't an issue.
What I typically do is around the 10km mark, I turn on electric motors, go to parascope depth, lower parascope, turn off everything and keep silent running lights on. Then ensure someone is at navigation, always.. Then approach the mark, they exit the sunken sub, then I leave, and at 10k or so, raise the parascope, and if clear go up.
I also tend to use the lower speed settings ( 1 through 3 - but if there are vessels then 1 or 0 until they pass - if I need air I turn ventilation on briefly [ it can't be turned on when 'toxic' ] )...
Those missions are always easy for me. I never get spotted, up to this point. Then again I haven't played many - I tend to avoid them simply because the next act is typically ( invade the port and destroy x number of ships )... The issue with this is the ports follow you out to sea and will teleport around your sub, causing you to ram them, etc.... it's pretty annoying, and I'm not sure whether they fixed this yet.
I believe I sunk about 6 fast attack boats with the deck gun and shot down 3 of the 4 engine bombers. No credit for these btw since I had already completed the mission.
Idiotic and ridiculous mission. Oh, and the whole time every single idiot officer was going to sleep.
This was an EASY day 1 new game mission.
So folks whined the game was too easy, there you go, now it's impossible for people like us. Also, there is not enough electrical power starting off to be able to do this silently without getting detected (or needing to surface to recharge the batteries).
If the devs wants us to do this mission, he needs to move it up to much later until after we have Accumulators 2 or 3.
Oh, regarding the silent running, the above was AFTER I had Mission Accomplished and was below 10m depth running electric motors.
A group of 3 fast attack boats insta-spawned on top of me and began depth charging. I surfaced and killed them with the deck gun.
Once I got far enough away a group of 3 aircraft came at me, insta-spawning in in the visual circle.
Also, while I was shooting with the deck gun at the fast attack boats, they kept disappearing right in front me. They kept turning into a weird torpedo like object.
Maybe... I dunno... do something to reduce your sound?
How did you use the deck gun/flak with "every single idiot officer" sleeping?
Is that a rhetorical question?
Yes every officer (excluding Kholer who was at 0 sleep and I was controlling him) kept going to sleep.
Keeps happening mid alarm/engagement. There should be an option to block officers from going to sleep or something.
You had the bug which causes groups of boats from port, or the port itself, to follow you out into sea. So as you were moving away, the boats or port would spawn, at a random location around you, approx the same distance.
And yeah, the alarms are blaring and the officers can only seem to stay awake for 12 hour days or so. Normal humans stay awake 16 hour days, and younger people should have no problem staying awake 32 to 48 hours without any loss of focus, etc...
You can also stay awake for 5 days at a time, but it usually ends up strange by that period. I have a broken neck, back and severe nerve damage caused on May 7, 2011 for which I am still fighting for justice for because I am in a state of living-death, a legal term, and I'm lucky if I can get a few hours of sleep once every 5 days. That coupled with the pain, inability to walk a lot of the time, and many other issues - I wouldn't wish on anyone.
Before this happened to me, I had only been up for 5 days once before - when I had a severe bout of jet-lag. I couldn't sleep no matter what I did. Finally at around the 5 day mark I passed out but it got strange.
Now, since it seems to be my normal pattern because of the pain, I can stay up for 5 days without those effects - but I am incredibly lucky when my body passes out and I get 30 minutes of sleep.
Once I know I'm close enough to night and the nets.. I wait some more if needed, then I sneak in under cover.
So now Im in the cold dark 10 meter water, completely quiet.
Then when I went to external view, I discovered the sea floor was lit up and I confirmed the reason for ships killing me so easy.
I had left my searchlight turned on since the previous mission. :)
