I went with B) Saw an animation of my guy coming back to our boat...
Then I shelled it with the 88.
Not sure if youbsunk it before clicking option B)
I then sunk the boat once he was back on. In fact i used the same guy to man the 88 to sink it.
I sent my engineer to investigate a submarine
Then the game asked me to sink it or to mine it.
I clicked on "mine", nothing happened. New try : same result.
Then I clicked on the top right cross of the window : it did close, and my engineer was stuck on the remote submarine, with no return possible.
I had to reload last save.
However their icons still showed up on the bottom right until I started to move away from the area, and then they disappeared.
I tried saving and reloaded, but they were still stuck on the sub.
So I loaded an earlier save before I got to the sub, but this time I sent another officer and this time, he came back.
Here's a screenshot of the skipper and engineer after I saved the game and reloaded it with both of them stuck on the sub. The sub must have moved a bit when reloading the save and left them standing next to it on the water.

I would save the game right before you send anyone over and try the ones you have.
