Are G7a (T1) torpedoes just objectively better than the G7e (T2) torps? (Can surface ships see wake bubbles?)
They're cheaper, faster, and much more reliable (fewer duds). The only advantage that the G7e torps had historically was that they didn't produce a visible wake of bubbles which might give the submarine away, but surface vessel crews never seem to notice those anyway. The G7a is even cheaper, which is not historically accurate (G7es were in fact much cheaper). Is there any reason to ever use the G7e?

Whoever loads steam powered torpedo in aft tube should be relieved from command.

I'm guessing it's because aft torpedoes basically never get pre-heated and thus are more likely to be duds than plain old electrics?

Why?

oh wait, I think I actually found the answer. However, it's a real world answer, not a UBOAT-legit answer.
I think the reason why you don't want that is because once pre-heated, a Steam torpedo has a much higher chance of detonating.... and you have so much machinery in the back that if it detonates INSIDE the boat, it might end up unable to surface/drive.

either that or also RL-answer (for now), if you have to fire a torpedo from the aft, it probably means you're running away from something and if said something sees your torpedo's wake (which becomes more likely since they're searching for you), it tells them exactly where you were upon firing it.

Taken from wikipedia: On 14 September 1939, U-30 was attacked by loitering United Kingdom Fairey Swordfish naval bombers when she fired a T1 from her stern torpedo tube at the SS Fanad Head. U-30 was undamaged in the attack and served until she was scuttled at the end of the war.
so it was closer to option 2

heres some tips on this. electrics run at a fixed speed, but leave no trail. theyre good against slow moving or stationary targets and in cases against military craft, you really dont want to give away your position if it misses. if you are going for long range attacks, the gas powered ones are good because of the adjustable speed options. just bear in mind youre sacrificing range for speed and as they leave a wake behind them its usually best to use these against targets that have little chance to retaliate against you in the event of failure. id also recommend using them at night to help offset the con trail they leave.
