How are you guys able to go undetected? is it possible?
i like to do things manually...i dont really find the auto target gathering to be immersive enough so i like to do it myself. However i find that at a distance of more then what the sight range is on the attack periscope...i cant get to gather info properly. When i try nothing appears... so i guess i have to be in sight range that is detemined by the circle around the ship... but when i get close that way alot of the times they spot me....

This doesnt seem accurate. in other games as well as back then i would imagine they got their target information from a distance then lined up a 90 degree strike based on the info gathered earlier but in this game it doesnt seem to be the case... even tho i can see them manually myself... i cannot see them lol....

you can get very close, what is the problem? im always trying to sneak myself within 1 km range before attacking.

Try raising your periscope using the scale on the top left, if you are getting waves with high peaks and cant see the other ships. That may increase detectablity, I dont know, but you can do more stand off kills if you can see the ships.

tips for getting closer without being noticed...

disable all uneccessary equipment such as compass, pump, compressor etc...
enable blue light for silent running (lets idle personal go to bed)
add supporting mates to periscope operator, it increases visual range. (also in manual mode)
sneak slowly at 3 kn
assign engineer to steering planes controls, this helps maintaining depth in a more stable way.
set depth 1 or 2 meters less then default periscope depth when the sea is rough, it helps increasing visual range.

Good list. I use the same method
I didnt know about the depth and made even a bigger difference. Thanks!

i think its got a lot to do with skill of the captain in manual mode in my experience so far
for examples.
more assistants assigned affects view range both auto and manual, this works the same for gunners and sonar officers
weather and fatigue affect performance auto and manual

manual spotting and tdc is a real problem in bad conditions or anything over 4km,the data keeps dropping out and you cant store it.
i also believe the tdc tools are unreliable over 3km ,seen some strange torpedo behaviour, but all this may be by design.and a veteran captain does indeed seem to have a better success rate.

just had one mission in heavy fog,and my manual view distance was less than 1km
unfortunately,u can cheat a bit and still pick up the contacts by mousing around.

my advice is to save scum at the point of contact and practice TDC etc

edit
i forgot to mention you can see the ranges of the the different equipment on the tactical map and how they change by the above mentioned

Agreed. I never use auto anymore. My captains are always unrested.

or you can just hold the ALT button and see everything, position of all vessels around you with ship-class. Planes in the air aournd you etc. Even when having no any station occupied. I wished we could disable the cheats ;.)

also when attacking a guarded convoi, and the conditions allows it, consider a night surfaced attack.

At night, and when its cloudy or even stormy its almost impossible to see a surfaced boat further then 1km away. Also when youre surfaced youre are almost invisible for escorts ASDIC, they can pass right next to you without being aware of your presence. You can use this to your advantage, you have much greater visual range compared to periscope and have better situation awareness, and therefore have more time to prepare the solution.

As you release torpedoes slowly dive away, without making too much noise, until they arrive and alarm the escorts you should have reached a fair depth already.

hey guys i guess i could have elaborated a bit more... alot of the time i've been trying to gather info its been in rough weather so the info i gather just vanishes and i have to do it all over agian... but if i go a little closer sometimes they see me and head off the other direction.

ive managed to get off a few attacks manually and the torps should have hit but instead went underneath the ships :/ we really need to be able to set the bloody depth!

as for not being spotted... ill have to mess aorund with it i think... like i can see them a ways off myself but because they are outside of the "Sight" line none of the info i gather ever stays...just need to get within the sight line while submerged.....

is there a way to use manual sonar?
