How are you supposed to plot an intercept course such that you are in a good firing position?
So in SH3, because you could precisely set your heading, you could use the trigonometry tools to plot a course such that when you intercepted your target, you would be as close to a 90 degree angle off their bow as possible, giving you an optimal torpedo hit.

In this game though, as far as I'm aware, you can't manually set a heading to travel, and while you can doodle on the map with the same trigonometry tools as SH3, it's kind of moot since you can't set a heading anyway, and the tools aren't as robust as SH3.

So for the moment, I dive deep to check hydrophones, and when I get a contact the best I can really do is click on that target and then click the "set an intercept course" button, but that usually puts you in a terrible firing position when you arrive, with you basically 0 degrees off their bow. Torpedos fired at such at bad angle almost always miss. I've tried using the rudder controls to position myself better, but it's not ideal.

Is this how we're supposed to be doing it in this game or am I missing something?

What I do is put a mark over the enemy ships, wait a bit, then put a second mark, then draw a line to plot their course, or, if I'm lazy, just eyeball their position, then use the waypoint tool to draw an intercept course that the ship will follow automatically, which, for the purposes of this game, gets close enough.

Should be better though, proper heading support would be appreciated.

So you can actually manually steer the uboat by right clicking and moving your mouse in the desired direction in third person. Beyond that from the map ui there is also the ability to mess with the ships steering next to the dive button.

I always set me up for 90 degree aob attacks, but you have to plot manually and dont let your navigator try and intercept

Swing out wide, use surface speed, go around and get in front of convoy, wait quietly.. they will come to you.. the easiest answer since you provided an easy scenario with no specifics.

Avoid all shallow water - measurement is upper right corner when map is displayed.
Avoid being trapped by inlets where you dont have a turning radius..
Careful about airbases or aircraft carriers during surface running..
Make list of all the things you can do to get ready for high morale, high electric charge, high readiness in torpedo rooms, prior to beginning dive.
