UBOAT

Should I dive during storms?
I know in the movie Das Boot one of the crew says to the captain "We're burning up fuel for nothing" and then the captain dives the boat.

maybe it would make scence to dive and sail slow at example 50 instead of being tossed arround for houres during a hard storm with 10-15-20m high waves.
They wont be able to attack anyone in a storm anyway, and i also think that the ocean will conceal ship noises ect.
If the storm start to wear off i asume they would stay on the surface to charge batterys and fresh air.

ps. in the game i think you can just stay on the surface it dosent matter.

Another reason is it was dangerous to be on the surface anyway during a storm, you can't go up on the submarines deck anyway, far too dangerous, and far too much water can quickly get in. 30 foot swells would swamp your Uboat irl and quickly sink it, or wash several people overboard, and a submarine can't be caught doing search and rescue for its crew.

That and then everything else you mentioned. Just far safer to stay underwater, and drive to a calmer section of the storm, or wait it out.

No, storms don’t affect navigation, they dived in das boot to wait out the storm I think, when storms and fog do affect navigation then maybe unless you remember how to manually keep course, only reason I would dive is if there’s lots of fog and I’m looking for a ship so I just dive and use hydrophone cause “you hear more down here then you see up there”

If memory serves they only dived for one hour at a time to give the crew some respite from all the bucking and swaying of the storm.

I've noticed rough seas also slow your speed down

Of course affect storms the navigation.
Navigation is not only keep the course, its also knowing the own position.
In a strom, unable to shot a star or the sun, its very hard to calculate the position only with speed and heading of the boat, the wind push the boat in one direction, the current in another direction, how much and the direction are not constant... , that leads to a bunch of errors.
Even in calm weather its easy to be miles away from the calculated position, after a week in a strom you can only say for sure in wich ocean you are.

Another thing I learned about navigating a Uboat in a storm (documentation about the new German 212 Alpha class and its crew).
To reduce the boat wobbling around in a storm you have to dive 10m per wave height in metres. So, 3m waves and you have to dive 30m to get into calm water.

Very good tip, thank you!
