...during fights you are always the only one battling the EBEs, so why are the companions even there? Seems to me that they should be playable characters but I tried to play local co-op with a friend, and seems there is no way to do so, and there is no online multiplayer either, as far as I know... so why are the 4 characters even there?

I think it's simply to give you the feeling of being part of a squad? Who knows........it is supposed to be a military operation to retake points on the Earth, after all.

Yes, but having a squad on the field that does absolutely nothing is kinda weird.
