Good enough.
I'll give it a go then.
Thank you.
Odin Sphere and Muramasa, while fantastic, are repetitive too, don't feature co-op either, and costed about twice the price at launch.
I'm not going in thinking it'll be as good as Vanillaware's games, I'm just asking if it's similar.
After all it's a low profile game edited by Rising Star, which generally mean you're in for something quirky.
Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's not.
I'll still try it, but thanks for warning. At worst, I'll refund.
best comparison i could make is monster huntervs god eater
monsterhunter = odin,muramasa,dragons crown
god eater= earths dawn
basically, only reason to play god eater is lack of a monster hunter game
I feel the need to point out something, being that 2D side-scrolling beat-'em-ups have always been my favorite genre since the NES. If you're not playing these games for the combat, you're absolutly not the target market and you're probably not going to have a great time. Generally every game in the genre, especially Muramasa and Odin Sphere, are very repetitious.
And let's be honest, I love me some Monster Hunter, I do, and as much as I try I can't even begin to get into God Eater, but if any game genre is to be deemed "repetitious" and "grindy" it's the Hunting genre and Monster Hunter is the king of all three - the genre, grind, and repetition.
So I don't think it's fair to use repetition or "grindy" as a criticism, ever really, but especially not in your case, as a Monster Hunter fan. Something about Earth's Dawn just isn't fun for you, but repetition isn't the issue, it's just easy to notice and blame that when you're not having fun.
I think the fact that it looks and is animated like a poorly executed mobile phone game does most people in and that's a very fair criticism, but [for me, being personal here] the combat is far more than that and gives it a pass in all arenas, which any good 2D beat-'em-up has going for it. I think if you pair that with progression being difficult, if you're not having fun and willing to grind out some better equipment and level it up, that the grind that one is generally OK with becomes "too grindy."
**TL;DR: Don't call it too repetitive or grindy when the issue is that you're just not feeling the game - they're very cheap excuses. Not fun "just 'cause" is far better criticism.
Mostly because GE puts you into action immediately.
If I play a monster hunting game, it's for the part where you bash monsters with whatever weapons and powers you have, not for the boring fluff like having to get through the map zone per zone.
Anyway.
I tried Earth Dawn and I like it.
As for the graphics and animation, Strid, I think you're a bit harsh.
They're good IMO. The puppet style animation works well here.
Combat is great, too.
But yeah, it's really grindy.
A bunch of missions have to be repeated, and you have to farm a bit before killing the first real boss if you're playing on hard mode.
Anyway, that said, the gameplay more than makes up for it and in the end, that is all that matters [to me]. I'm pretty sure if this game was animated as well as ICEY [Unity too is why this specific comparison] it'd probably be talked about up there with Dragon's Crown and the like. Unfortunately, mobile games have a stigma and this asthetic is heavily associated with that stigma - so people see it and it triggers: "crap mobile game $30!? WTF GET BENT!"
look its not the worste game of its kind, just saying its well a class under odins sphere or dragons crown and 30 bucks is alot of money for what seems, like you said, a mobile game
shadow warrior 2 is like 30 bucks or something like that and that gae is a 3d fps rpg
In order to unlock all of the skills (not mandatory for story progression, but mandatory to 100% the game) the player has to play through the same missions - not the same stages, the same MISSIONS - anywhere from 2 to 4 times (each stage is composed of multiple missions)! And most of these missions are graded, so there's a chance that the player will have to repeat the mission if they fail to make the grade. About 95% of the stages are doable on the first try. Fortunately, this only happened to me a couple times (on the reactor stage where there's three sets of enemies).
Add to the fact that in order to unlock all of the available skills after playing through all of the missions multiple times AND getting the required score for the mission, the dev team still thought it'd be a good idea to force the player to craft and use each of the different weapons 8,000 times. I spent most of my day today going back through to clear out missions so in order to unlock all of the skills and I still have to attack with the gun 5,000 times and the bow about 7,300 times.
Personally, by the time I cleared the story mode I had purchased just about everything I wanted to, and was ready to call it quits there, but in order to 100% [Platinum] the game there's a major grind needed!
