This has been a problem since MvC3. Check this post out http://www.capcom-unity.com/marvelvscapcom/go/thread/view/55141/27040533/local-multiplayer-controller-issues-on-mvc3-player-2-does-not-register-unless-like-controllers-used?liveView=1 The post is from 02/18/2011 just 3 days after the release of MvC3 Fate of wo worlds. This will continue to be a problem because Capcom dosen't seem to be in a hurry to fix this. You can play local two player as long as you have two controllers hooked up that both use the same logic board.

Have you tried direct input vs wireless? Also can you confirm this works with xbox 360 controllers? So far I have tried old PS3 Madcatz TE fightsticks vs Xbox 360 wireless controllers and was unsuccessful. Both controllers are recognized by Steam but not individually recognized by MvC: Infinite. I have heard that you can connect two wireless Xbox 360 controllers plus an old Madcatz fightstick which should work although I have not tested this yet. I will update once I have confirmed.

I just had one x-input stick (not sure if xbone or 360) and one direct input stick and we played just fine.

I guess what I'm asking was the XInput device wireless? I am specifically experiencing an issue with a wireless XInput device and a DirectInput both being recognized by the game as first player. This happens no matter the order in which they are connected. I have also attempted resetting both devices while in game which worked for a fraction of a second. I have tried restarting the game, restarting Steam all while trying to disconnect and reconnect the devices. NO BUENO

The only way I was able to get this to work was with DirectInput Enabled (Default launch option). I thehn plugged in a 3rd fightstick (a ps1 stick with a usb adapter), and amazingly with 3 controllers plugged in the first two worked fine.

Hopefully any 3rd controller does the trick? Hope this helps.

I tested a similar theory last night and it proved to be true. I connected two wireless Xbox 360 controllers through one wireless 360 remote receiver and one PS3 MadCatz SE Street Fighter IV fightstick before launching Steam. I then launched the game and voilà I could use one xbox 360 controller and on old MadCatz fightstick. You also can turn the extra 360 controller off after launching the game.

that is correct for the most part, to make it more efficient though you can go into the game's options, then in options go into system and enable "controller select", if you have 2 controllers acting as player one (as most appear to have here) and have a Direct Input/XInput switch on your gamepad then switch one of those gamepads to the other mode and it will be recognized as a new (aka 3rd) controller, that will bypass the issue without the need for owning a physical 3rd controller.
