SFV plays fine on pad ...
are you sure?
SFV and SF4 are 6 button games making it played superior on a stick since you can tap the buttons with your finger on a stick where as a pad requires you to use one thumb only
Nuff said ....
I am not sure about that.
I dislike using a stick for a 4 button game it feels stupid. Not to mention my executions on stick isn't good at all.
And if pros use controller then I am not wasting my time learning this stick since I spent a year and it still feels like crap compared to controller that I grew up with
I'd imagine you could get away with some characters using a pad, but some of the motions might be a bit trickier on pad.
Off my head, these motions 'may' be a little harder on pad:
- Super jump HP > airdash down forward > jump HP, land, repeat.
- Wavedashing backwards (b + P+P, db, Neutral, b+PP) x repeat.
- Short hops (d,u, hold D) into air dashes.
Strictly speaking, this is a 6 button game, not a 4 button game. There's 4 main attack buttons, along with Gem Surge & Tag button.
If you're going to play this on pad, you'll definitely want to assign LP+HP & LK + HK to one of the shoulder buttons, which leaves your other 2 shoulder buttons to be assigned to Gem Surge & Tag. Some of the combos, while definitely doable, would leave your fingers pretty sore due to the high speed button presses.
But I digress. There's lots of pros in Guilty Gear & MVC that utilizes a pad instead, so yeah. No real advantage for one over another in my humble opinion, just a matter of sticking to what makes you feel comfortable.
In my opinion, SFV is easy on pad due to it's relatively low execution leniency and way shorter combos as compared to this game. You're looking at easily 20+ button presses for a simple combo here in MVCI.
So it had me thinking could DBFZ be very different to this game? what are your thoughts on DBFZ with Pad vs Stick? from what you have seen so far that is
Personally I wanna use my current Sanwa modded fightstick Qanba Q1 as part of an Arcade cabinet project, I wanna build a dedicated arcade so I can stand up and play as opposed to this crap of putting stick on my lap wanna have the seperate HDMI cable going to the arcade aswell only difference is I plan on using my current PC to do both. The Arcade aswell as browse the net on the same PC using 2 monitors one for the cabinet and one for my desk where I type
What you think about that idea compared to buying a DS4? I would play WAY better if I had a real arcade caibnet I grew up playing on them
Wellll.... I haven't played DBFZ at all, so... I suppose my comment is really based on what I've seen on videos, so take it with a pinch of salt haha.
DBFZ's combos looks relatively simpler to execute, and seems to be more... neutral focused and positioning, as opposed to MVCI's balls out ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ crazy stuff going on. I think DBFZ eventually would turn out to be slower in pace, and probably a bit more tactical.
So yeah. I think for DBFZ you might be able to pull off DBFZ on a DS3/4, seeing that a lot of the combos seem to be LLMMHH, qcf+AA, etc, with the exceptions of the occasional assists. It doesn't look particularly execution heavy, and from what I've noticed, everyone utilizes homing dashes, so there's no real reason for doing triangle jump mix-ups ala MVCx.
That said, isn't it a bit of a waste to make your Qanba an arcade cabinet though...? Off my head, I believe that stick is multi-platform compatible, and it's a pretty rock solid stick as well.
But yeah, I DEFINITELY agree with you on the arcade cabinet part. Till today, I still favor having a fixed base arcade stick over a stick that you put on your lap. Man... the memories of KOF98 / MVC2 in arcades. I don't think I'd be able to pull off those stuff with stick-on-your-lap nowadays :D
I grew up on the American Bat Type Happ stick on the arcades, my Qanba Q1 is basically just a PS3 stick with PC function assuming the game supports DINPUT. If not like in Killer Instinct I just use Joy To key basically. So I will decide if to use this stick on the Cabinet or buy the HAPP parts and make it even more authentic. But I will NEVER use this stick on my Lap again I tried and tried and HATED it every time.
The amazing stuff I pulled off on the Arcade cabinets I can NOT do it with this stick on my lap so I dunno how justin wong and daigo does it. But I don't care I am just gonna build me that Cabinet and run the HDMI cable to the it so I can play MVCI and SFV etc on the cabinet.
I have great memories playing Samurai Showdown 4 and Last Blade 2 on Arcades a long time ago. Hell I might even do a Rasberry Pi for the arcade aswell to run emulators and those old games making it even more authentic.
It's the weight of the arcade cabinet and positioning that makes it so different in terms of execution; for the life of me, I can't ever fathom how they can actually do those insane stick heavy motions on your lap and still be precise at the same time. I suppose maybe then just make sure the base of the cabinet is heavy enough to support sudden motion jerks without it moving.
Interesting that you mentioned the Raspberry Pi though. I've just finished something with an arcade stick and a Pi, but to be honest, I'm not terribly fond of the emulation it provides. From what I've tried, most games work fine, but there's this frame-skip and latency that's a bit annoying.
I think generally the CPS1/CPS2 games (SF2, SF Alpha series, MVC1) and most Neo Geo games (KOF94 - 2003, SS4, SSV, LB2) are fine, but SF3 (New Gen/2nd Impact 3rd Strike) doesn't run too well on the Pi, there's quite a number of dropped frames.
Any games before SF3 should be alright though.
