Killing Time

Killing Time

God this game is so broken!!!!
Ok so downloaded and was really looking forward to playing the game and the colours are all over the place and the game keeps on flashing??
Tried to change from 32bit to 16 bit and nothing??
Someone needs to look into this and get it fixed as they shouldn't release the older games in this state just for them to not work well at all??

Same problem with me, except in my case it was worse. It almost messed my PC up by doing something with wi-fi adapter driver, I was really scared that it would never detect drivers again, though re-ejection of adapter in PC helped.

The game is just poorly optimized and should run better than it does................like i say why bother releasing the game in this state at all?????
And so Retroism/Prism Entertainment dont give a damn about their customers and they will just leave us with a broken product that sadly (for a lot of people!!) wont run properly at all!! :(
WHY BOTHER RELEASING IT AT ALL IN THIS BROKEN STATE..................SHAME ON YOU!!!! :(
And still no answer at all.................well I for one wont be buying any more games from a company that dont give a damn about their customers!!
What a GRRRRRRRRRRRREAT game this truely is let down by a terrible port and awful back up from people who dont give a damn if the game is out or not!! :(
ALL SAD............ALL TRUE!!! :(
And still no answer from a company that just dont give a damn.................FACT!!!!!!

You may want to try applying this unofficial patch: http://cubanraul.altervista.org/kt/index.htm
It replace the intro/end videos to 640x480 resolution and include some extra DLL files to run the game better. (The game only runs in 640x480 resolution.) I believe they are working on a refined version to release in the future exclusively on their ZOOM Platform website, so that it fixes most of these issues hopefully and allow playing at higher resolution.

The older trick to fix the color glitch was to kill the process "explorer.exe" that is the process that keep your desktop up. But now it's not needed anymore with that unofficial patch I linked. At least it worked fine for me so you can try it.

The steps I could give to install the patch to your Steam copy:

1. Download the unofficial patch[cubanraul.altervista.org]

2. When running the installer, when it ask for a folder where to install to, point it to the game folder installed in your Steam installation or wherever you installed your Steam copy of the game. (The folder pointed at should have KILLTIME.EXE in it)

3. After clicking Next, check "Killing Time is already installed" then click next and it should install the patch in your Steam copy. (This will overwrite some files, you can always do "Verify integrity of game cache" by right clicking the game from your Steam library to revert the changes if you want.)

4. The patch should be installed. I don't have the Steam version of this game but I think you can just run the game normally through Steam after.

Hope this helps for many who bought the game here on Steam. I'm a fan of this game.

Late reply, but there seems to be something off about the patch's installation file. Every time it reaches specific part of download, my antivirus reports that there is a malware danger.

Strange. I used it just fine and my antivirus never reported it. I can reassure that it is safe though. It's simply a custom installer for the game for people who has a physical CD copy or a digital copy of the game.

Is it the installer exe that is getting reported or anything from what the patch install?

I know that one of the files that it installs I believe, is a DLL that hook up with the game to fix the colors and some other crash issues the game apparently had. It also replace some AVI videos with rescaled ones so that it still fits 640x480 resolution instead of switching to a smaller resolution just to play the intro video.

He reports about exe itself at some point of download.

The installer is safe, I used it and seem to not contain any type of virus. It's probably just a false alert from your antivirus?

Otherwise I could just zip the content of what the patch installs so you can manually install the files without the installer.

At the end of the day the game should not have been re-released in such an awful state and the company who did should have made sure the game ran fine before any release date was given!!
Yet again customers have to sort out issues that some companies/devs just cant be arsed about!! :(

And the thing is that they made some fixes exclusively on the version sold on ZOOM Platforms where I got my copy from. I think that fix should have been bundled aswell with the GOG and Steam version here.

That would be nice of you, though I think I will just turn anitvirus off while downloading.

Okay, I just downloaded and installed the patch and it didn't help. Graphics are still an LSD-ish mess. The only actual change I noticed is the change of game's icon.

Strange, make sure that at least a file called "MSVFW32.DLL" is in the same folder that KILLTIME.EXE is located. Otherwise, it might have been installed wrong or something.

Even though, this really shows that the game really needs to be re-released in a modern port since they do have to source code of both the 3DO and PC version.

I recently saw another solution, thanks to Batteryman's comment from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=ocQx5RKP2lg
It is possible to run the game in windowed mode and have the colors fixed using dgVoodoo2.

You can download dgVoodoo2 here: http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2.html (Just click either v2.54 or WIP37)

1. When you downloaded it and opened the zip file, only extract "dgVoodooCpl.exe" and all 3 DLL files from the MS folder to your game folder where "KILLTIME.EXE" is located. (For some reason, anti-virus might freak out at times for dgVoodooCpl but it is also safe.)

2. Run dgVoodooCpl.exe (maybe with administrator right can help) and make sure to set the settings like those two screenshots https://imgur.com/a/aYUMm that I took of the setup I did to make the game run well in windowed mode.

3. Click Apply and OK, then simply running KILLTIME.EXE may run the game in windowed mode (for few seconds, it will be on top left of the screen but having "Center app window" checked will make the game window force back to the middle of your desktop.)
