How does the save system work?

Several times I have exited the game thinking my progress would be saved, and then on starting the game find I have to redo puzzles. What is going on? Can't we just start where we left off? Why can't you include a save option instead of stupid autosave?

The game automatically saves your progress at specific points in the narrative - an icon that looks like a snail shell appears in the top right corner when this happens.

I have noticed that the games does save what items you have discovered whenever you find them - you do not have to go and locate them again, in other words.

Your save games are in your local user directory and should also be mirrored on the Steam cloud.
