TD;DR: Play Pyromancers defensively.
Yeah, I definitely play them defensively. When I want to just cycle cards and blow stuff up I do an Arcane build (like yours, just with a Storm Ring or Thunderstones instead of the Arcane Channeler). I think my set up for Fire Mage is usually this:
School: Pyro
Book: Scorching
Scroll: Mist
Robe: Pyromancer's
Trinket: Firestones
Familiar: Salamander
I usually do ok but I haven't even gotten close to clearing a whole adventure yet. It seems like the Scroll and Robes are no brainers (the Heat Scrolls are bad as pure Fire), but I'm not sure if I'm using the best book. For some reason Book of Conflagration is missing a card for me too (only has 5 cards, while every other book, fire or not, has 6) so I haven't even tried it. I haven't tried the Stone Familiar yet, so that may be better over all than the Salamander, and the same with the Arcane Channeler.
