Two is like Winnie-the-Pooh, where it's pretty much acknowledged that the described events are make-believe, but the story is so elaborate that those events create a parallel reality.
Three is where the distinction between real and make-believe is blurred. That can be the most complex, but it's the most difficult to pull off, and especially in games writers often end up with "Yeah, it's all inconsistent, just make whatever you want of it".
So I think you're considering case 3, and the game hints at it too, but the blurring of the lines can be done in different ways. Maybe there is a clear boundary, we're just not told which events are real and which are make-believe, maybe there isn't a clear distinction.
Whichever it is, one of my very few complaints is that I think the game is overdoing "going out of character" and "breaking the fourth wall" jokes. Emerald City Confidential was keeping a straight face from start to finish, and I think that was great.
Well, if I'm right he would be the weirdest videogame villain ever encountered in my gamer history. :D
And there's rapelay...
we would like nothing more than to jump with you guys on this one, as we really, really enjoy the "theories" threads :) There are a lot of creative theories here and some hilarious ones but we have to keep it on the down low for now. All I can say is: Bear with us for a little longer and everything will be revealed. Twists are bound to happen. ;)
2. There have been tragic stories of children hiding from firefighters attempting to rescue them. That could be the case here...
3. Flint is either hiding or dead. I believe we catch a glimpse of him when the study room goes all crazy during your first attempt to leave it. It looks like everything is covered in ash.
4. Amber is either having a bad dream while haunted by the events that took her brother's life and burnt their home to the ground, or she's currently tripping out after having inhaled a serious amount of smoke and carbon dioxide because she went back into the house to look for her brother.
5. Amber and Flint. I mean, c'mon. Sounds like Ember and Flint, fire-related.
6. Maybe it's the art style, but it seems like there's hazy smoke everywhere. Furthermore, red is the only color besides shades of black and white.
Sorry if I spoiled the everything.
