Another patch just dropped!

Hey everyone!

We've fixed one of the biggest headaches in the game: the startup bug where the game could get stuck on a gray square the first time you launched it. This should finally be gone! If you still run into it for any reason, please let us know. We're keeping a close eye on it.

We've also tweaked the dice balance a bit more. In particular, the section before entering Elysium Tower in Book 2 has been rebalanced. If you're low on dice, you now also have the option to postpone entering the tower and continue exploring for a while before starting the quest.

A couple of Quest Log fixes too:

Fixed the Quest Log getting stuck after loading a save.
Fixed an incorrect quest entry showing up during the Skin Deep questline.

We've also made a number of performance improvements, so it should run a bit smoother overall.

Can't Even Load Into A New Game

Just bought this game and every time I try to start a new game I get a loading screen that then just flickers different shades of red while the the music plays choppily. Anyone else have this problem?

How do I get more dice?

Okay, I feel stupid, but I... ran out of dice and now I'm just moving around unable to do any tests. Is this intentional? Cause only thing I get from this is frustration. I have no indication how to get more and what to do, so I just stopped playing, because autofailing or not being able to do tests is just disappointing....

Week One: Survived

It’s been one week since our game hit the wild.

For four years, this game was almost our entire lives. Every evening after work, every weekend, every holiday Bilge (Whiplash) and I poured absolutely everything we had into this project. Seeing you all actually play it, and care about it... has been the most overwhelming, beautiful experience of our lives.

The Bumps in the Road

Of course, not everything went flawlessly. We had more bugs than we'd like. Some systems misbehaved, and players rightly pointed out continuity hiccups, awkward pacing, or spots where we could have done better.

As a result, this week has been a blur of patches. We’ve smashed progression blockers, fixed save issues, ironed out dialogue bugs, added more collectible Dice, buffed items, and tweaked the Dice economy. We know the balance still isn't quite where it needs to be, but we are wrestling with those systems every single day. The whiteboard is still full, but we're excited to keep crossing things off. Thank you for your incredible patience while we get it right.

The Highlights

The best part of this whole week? Watching the community form around this game. I've never felt such a deep sense of belonging.

A Massive Community W: To the absolute legend who took it upon themselves to fully localize the game into Russian. you completely blew our minds. We never in a million years thought something like that would happen. Just... wow. We are so incredibly humbled and grateful.

Known Issues

We're still investigating a few issues that haven't been fully solved yet:

Quest Log: Sometimes the quest log appears to lock itself visually. This is only a visual issue, your actual quest progress is not affected. We're still trying to track down what's causing it.

Intro Video Stuttering: The opening cinematic is still stuttering on certain setups. We are actively looking into it.

First-Launch Colorful Blocks: When opening the game for the first time, some players are greeted by random, colorful blocks on the screen. It behaves very differently depending on the machine.

So far, the community has found two temporary workarounds:

Switch to Windowed Mode, then back to Fullscreen.
Restart the game.

We're still investigating the root cause and working on a proper fix.

What Comes Next?

We want to make this the game it deserves to be.

Finally, thank you to everyone who has left a Steam review. We're still hoping to reach more players. We've got a few Steam events coming up, so fingers crossed more players discover Celestial Return through those.

Changes

Improved the reliability of save/load in a few edge cases.
Fixed several dialogue issues and typos reported by the community.
Updated the Dice tutorial to make it clearer that Dice are consumable resources.
Added more collectible Dice to several scenes throughout the game.

Quest log sometimes doesn't show list of quests

May have already been mentioned but I had an issue with my quest log not displaying anything until I visited somewhere. When I opened it, it just showed an image. After I visited a destination, then it would show the list of current and completed quests. I guess it fixed it....

Edit: Turns out dice not saving between books was a bug, and additionally my save was pretty bugged. I'll give this another try, will update this if things seem fixed.

Wait until there's a balance patch.

It's really well-written. The vibes are _amazing_. Being thrown into a first-person dream sequence with WASD movement in this visual novel was _trippy_ and I loved it.
Unfortunately, the dice system as it currently stands just isn't balanced well enough; and the autosave system isn't generous enough for you to get by without save-scumming.

I'd been hoarding my dice, as the game recommended, and in book two was reset from like my well-preserved 10 dice back (including several lucky dice) down to a measly five - I did not realize dice were reset between books otherwise I'd have spent them on items - and then I was immediately locked into a save state where I could not progress without restarting the mission because I'd spend my dice a bit too freely - which I couldn't do, because I hadn't been saving enough.

(For reference, every time you're hit with a task that requires chance or skill, you roll between up to four sets of 2d4-2. Each set of 2d4-2 is a _specific_ set of dice that you have to spend - it's an item in-game.)

I'm super excited to play this game again when they fix the dice balance - but until then, can't recommend. Or at least, make sure to save-scum.

Warning: another long read. In short, if you like to read cyberpunk novels - buy the game.
If you've seen titles like Disco Elysium + Cyberpunk 2077, I'll have to disappoint you, as there are only a few elements in the game that fall under those descriptions: namely, the multiple voices in your head that give advice and the cyberpunk aesthetics. However, if you are familiar with or have even read Gibson's Sprawl trilogy and you are also acquainted with the Shadowrun trilogy, then this game will fit perfectly for you. It has a very thick grim atmosphere. The lingering senses of despair and doom are mixed in very well. Be prepared that this is a very Gibson-ish story with no Happy Endings (except maybe one hidden).
Great comic's visual style that is mixed with several live sequences in intros and visions and 3D animations (reminded of Suda's Silver Case).
Great soundtrack.
As for the choices, to be honest, the ones that really matter aren't that many. I counted 4-5 major ones: 1 in the first book, 2 in the second, and 2 in the 3rd. Still very good, and the ability to save at any moment allows you to squeeze maximum from even the first playthrough.
As for the world building, there is a lot of potential for it to become a small franchise with recurring characters like Hiro, Crow, or M.I., like it was in the Shadowrun trilogy. The Netherveil has a lot of stories to share, the way I see it.
If the devs continue with this approach to games, then first, please don't repeat the ZA/UM story; you have solid artists and musicians, keep it that way. Maybe the story needs to be a bit less scattered in some moments, but that's that. Second, don't overcomplicate the voices system; you have a solid foundation, do not multiply it, just focus on improving and diversifying those 5.
As for things that bugged me, only 2. First, the small portrait above experience points doesn't match Howard in the game and dialogues. Second, too many nose rings.
Thank you for the game and a refreshing view on the Gibson and Shadowrun formulas and writing styles.
