How the hell do you beat the first challenge? There MUST be a concept I'm not understanding. Something with the spells, but every time I use them I end up getting the spell on my guys, thus failure.

Don't use the poison, if you contaminate your heroes it's certain death for them too. Fire lightning combo seems to hit 6 if you are lucky or have good timing. Melee can finish the rest of the early group. Don't really know how to play the next section, they are extra thick. Then you run into a big group of plants that you probably need to save some spells for.

Yeah, I did. I wasn't aware you could upgrade the spells.
