How to unlock more heroes?

inside the game it shows slots for like 30 heroes how do you unlock more or change starter spells?

You unlock the main heroes by defeating elemental bosses (first one is the boss to the second region, the Water boss).

You also get some heroes by progressing far enough in the game, and after that most of the rest you unlock by beating the final boss with each hero character...

In total there are 12 unique heroes + 24 alternative heroes, so 36 in total. Each hero has a different starting item and a starting spell. Minor spoiler: I personally like the Tiger a lot, she has a fireball as a starting spell, which is much easier to use than e.g. Curse of Frost which is the Monk's starting spell...

The way to unlock all of the heroes is to continually beat the game with every character. As you beat the game you'll unlock the top row of heroes. You'll notice that in the bottom right hand corner of the heroe's picture there's a little purple treasure chest. If you haven't beaten the game with that hero the chest will be empty if you have then there will be a purple chest. You have to beat the game with the top row of heroes to unlock the second hero in the far lefthand column under the rogue. When you get to world 8 and go through a teleport you'll have unlocked the character the knight. In world 8 that's where you unlock the chest with a character by beating the last boss. From that point on you have to beat all 8 worlds and unlock the chests with all of the characters to unlock the character below them. You can take a mage or warrior from it's 1st skin all the way through it's 4th skin using this method. You then have to unlock an entire row through their 3rd skins to unlock the 3rd character in the far lefthand column. You have to beat the game with the entire 4th row to unlock the final character in the 4th hand column. A lot of the trophies are tied in to unlocking the character skins. I personally used the wrestler's 1st skin and unlocked the 4 skins of the tiger mage along with the 3rd skin of the other mages. I then used the 4th skin of the tiger to unlock the 4 skins of the warriors. I then used the 4th skin of the first warrior you start with to unlock the 4th skin of the mages. Find a strategy that works for you with whatever heroes best suite your fighting style.

To unlock spells and items you have to collect souls by defeating enemies. Once they have been unlocked you have to purchase them in the game to identify them.

I've played this game since the day it came out. This is THE hardest video game ever made. I have yet to unlock a single character and I have almost 300 hours of gametime.
