Controller support?
So I just bought the game. Although the steam store page didn't say that it did, I was just wondering if there was any way I could get a 360 controller working in-game. And yeah I know about the whole mouse > gamepad talk like the back of my hand. But at this moment in time, a gamepad is the most comfortable way I can play right now and every now and then I just like to lean back with a controller at hand. So NS2, any controller support or none whatsoever?

Prepare for the hate...
There is some software out there that does that, though I cant think of any at the moment, sure someone will come along with the answer{I use my ps3 controler IF im going to use a controler, and i have an emulator that lets me use it as a 360 pad, or assign keys to buttons}

//Quick edit, I think joy2key is one, though i dont remember ^^'

Controllers are not officially supported, unfortunately.

There might be a way to spoof it in with a third party program, like Xpadder or something. It'll be a pain in the butt to get working though.

If you are prepared to experiment, please write up a guide for getting a controller to work in NS2. There have been other people like yourself who have been wanting to play NS2 with a controller, so you can end up helping them out as well. Win/win.

As DragonTamer said, you'll have to use third party software if you want support for gamepads.

There's no gamepad support in NS2 and I doubt there ever will be. The gameplay just wasn't designed with controllers in mind. You often have to do quick 180+ degree turns with pin-point precision... which just isn't possible on a controller without generous amounts of aim-assist.

As for software though:

Xpadder[www.xpadder.com] is by far the best one if you ask me, it's easy to configure and has every feature you could ever want. Sadly, it's not free. There are some older version (5.3 I think) that you can download for free, since the program actually was free back in the day, but it requires you to run it in compatibility mode to work correctly on Windows 7 or higher. Obviously not a problem if you buy the latest version though.

There's also Joy2Key[www.electracode.com], which does the job for free... but it's less intuitive to setup and has less features.

I know Pinnacle Game Profiler[pinnaclegameprofiler.com] gets recommended a lot as well, but I can't say if it's good or not as I have no experience with it. Might be worth a look though.

If you can get a controller, you're going to be pretty much stuck playing Gorge, Lerk and Onos. And no marines. The rest require very fine motor control and percision.

Thanks for the info guys, I'll have a look at what the third-party programs have on offer for NS2.

@Squishpoke - Good idea. If I do manage to find a comfortable way to play NS2 on a gamepad I'll definitely write up a guide for future reference.

if you do use a controller, you may as well play gorge or onos only, everything else and you'll just get frustrated to no end trying to play on a controller.

Great thread, thanks for the info, I almost bought this game, haha. Glad I can save my money, maybe the game will be updated someday to support steam big picture, but Im not going to gamble with my money that way.

If you want to play something with a controller, this isn't a game for you.
