And try the game by yourself, you can refund if you play less than 2 hours.
They're even more unique than in Left 4 Dead. Each monster is of a different tier, and you get the bigger ones after more time. But each one has a dedicated role during the game, and sometimes these roles can change depending on what technologies and what time of the round it is.
Every monster is unique, and the commander of the team can research up to two more "attacks" or powers for each monster. They have roughly about 5 attacks/powers each, if not more.
Tier 0: dog (Skulk)
Very low HP, but is the best all-rounder. It can attack in packs, sneak around to attack from behind, and basically do everything but really often dies.
It plays a bit like the Hunter.
Tier 1: pig (Gorge)
It's a support unit, who can build structures faster, create walls, heal friendlies and later onc an act as a AoE structure damage. Has medium HP but is very slow (not good)
Tier 2: bird (Lerk)
Is another good all-rounder, but does nothing as good as a more specialized monsters. It's the fastest, it can fly, and it's basically the first-responder to threats. It's also a good support unit in grouped attacks, or can be a good harasser.
Tier 3: Swipey McScythBlades (Fade)
This one is the specialized player-killing monster. It has the best killing power, it has very good HP, and is also durable in combat and a master at hit'n'run tactics.
Tier4: Tank (onos)
The aliens are usually more about evading shots and dodging, well, this one is more about baiting shots, blocking, and being a meat shield with A LOT of HP. It plays like the Tank from L4D2.
